BEEG-1001 Tutorial sheet : 5
Basic Electrical Engineering Module I

1. A coil of inductance 80 mH and resistance 60Ω is connected to a 200 V, 100 Hz supply.

Calculate the circuit impedance and the current taken from the supply. Find also the
phase angle between the current and the supply voltage.
[Ans: 78.27Ω, 2.555 A, 39° lagging]
2. A series RL circuit is connected to a 110-V ac source. If the voltage across the resistor is
85 V, find the voltage across the inductor.
[Ans: 69.82V]
3. A coil is joined in series with a pure resistor of resistance 800 Ω across a 100 V, 50Hz
supply. The reading of a voltmeter across the coil is 45 V and across the pure resistor is
80 V. Find (i) inductance and (ii) resistance of the coil.
[*Hint: coil is composed of two parts resistance and reactance]
[Ans: 1.4H, 98.5Ω]
4. A coil connected to 100 V dc supply draws 10 A and same coil when connected to 100 V
ac voltage of frequency 50 Hz draws 5 A. Calculate the parameters (R, L) of the coil and
p.f.
[Ans: 10Ω, 55.13mH]
5. When a coil is supplied at 240 V, 50 Hz, the current is 6.45 A. When the frequency is
changed to 40 Hz at 240 V, the current taken is 7.48 A. Calculate the inductance and
resistance of the coil.
[Ans: L:0.1 H, R:20Ω]
6. A110-V rms, 60-Hz source is applied to a load impedance Z. The apparent power
entering the load is 120 VA at a power factor of 0.707 lagging.
(a) Calculate the complex power.
(b) Find the rms current supplied to the load.
(c) Determine Z.
(d) Assuming that Z = R + jXL, find the values of R and L.
[Ans: (a)84.84 + j84.84 VA, (b)1.091 A, (c) 71.278 + j71.278 Ω, (d)71.278 Ω,
0.1891 H]
7. The impedance of a circuit placed across a 120V, 50 Hz source is (10 + j20). Find
current and the power.
[Ans: 5.36 ∟- 63.4, 288 watt]
8. A coil has a resistance of 75Ω and inductance of 1.4 H. When the applied voltage is 240
V ac, at what frequency is the current 0.3 A? What is the p.f at this frequency?
[Ans:90.55Hz, 0.0938 lag]
9. A 40μF capacitor in series with a coil of resistance 8Ω and inductance 80mH is
connected to a 200 V, 100 Hz supply. Calculate,
(a) the circuit impedance, (b) the current flowing, (c) the phase angle between voltage
and current, (d) the voltage across the coil, and (e) the voltage across the capacitor.
