Basic Electrical Engineering Module I

1. Calculate the equivalent resistance of the given circuit.

(a) Ans 14.4 ohm (b) Ans 11 ohm

(c) Ans 6 ohm (d) 4k Ohm

2. A 30-W incandescent lamp is connected to a 230-V source and is left burning continuously over a
dark staircase. Determine:
(a) the current through the lamp.
(b) the cost of operating the light for one non-leap year if electricity costs 6.5Rs/kWh.
[Ans: (a)0.13 A, (b)Rs1708.2]

3. *Three light bulbs are connected to a 9-V battery as shown in figure, calculate:
(a) the total current supplied by the battery,
(b) the current through each bulb,
(c) the resistance of each bulb.

4. Find the power absorbed by each element in the given figure.

6. *The potentiometer (adjustable resistor) in given figure is to be designed to adjust current from 1 A
to 10 A. Calculate the values of R and Rx to achieve this.

7. (a) Three light bulbs are connected in series to a 100-V battery as shown in figure. Find the
current I through the bulbs.
(b) If the three bulbs of above problem are connected in parallel to the 100-V battery, calculate the
current through each bulb.

[Ans: (a) 1.2A]
