CONTROL SYSTEMS
Definition
A Control system consists of subsystems and
processes or (plants) assembled for the purpose of
obtaining a desired output with desired
performance, given a specified input
CONTROL SYSTEMS
Major measures in control system
CONTROL SYSTEMS
Four primary reasons
– Power amplification
– Remote control
– Convenience of input form
– Compensation of disturbances
CONTROL SYSTEMS
Open loop systems
CONTROL SYSTEMS
• Closed loop systems
CONTROL SYSTEMS
• Analysis and Design Objectives
– Analysis is the process by which a system’s
performance is determined
– Design is the process by a system’s performance
is created or changed
CONTROL SYSTEMS
Control system analysis and design focuses
on three primary objectives
– Producing the desired transient response
– Reducing the steady state errors
– Achieving stability
CONTROL SYSTEMS
• Stability
Total Response = Natural Response + Forced Response
CONTROL SYSTEMS
• Design of control system follows these steps:
– Determine a physical system and specifications from
requirements
– Draw a functional block diagram
– Represent the physical system as a schematic
– Use the schematic to obtain a mathematical mode,
such as block diagram
– Reduce the block diagram
– Analyze and design the system to meet specified
requirements and specifications that include stability,
transient response and steady state performance.
