1 Inside The Computer

PODAR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL & Jr. COLLEGE SANGLI.

Grade- IV Subject: Computer
Chapter 1 : Inside The Computer
Practice Sheet

Q.1 Name the following.

Answers
a A volatile memory of a computer RAM
B It is a small, portable storage device Pen drive
C It supplies power to the components inside the CPU box Power Supply Unit
D The thin metal plate that holds the processor Motherboard
e It is used to hold the instructions that are executed when the ROM
computer is initially switched on

Q.2 Match the device to its port.

Device Port
a speakers i Ethernet
b monitor ii Power port
c keyboard iii Audio In/Audio Out
d network cable iv VGA
e Power cord and CPU v PS/2

Ans: a: iii , b: iv , c: v, d: I , e: ii

Q.3 Answer the following questions.

a Write a short note on role of a hard disk.

Ans The hard disk is the main secondary memory of the computer.
It is inside the CPU.
It is used to store applications we use, and files that we create and save while using the applications.

b What is the use of the fan inside the CPU box?

Ans Due to the flow of current in the computer parts, they can get heated. Excessive heating of computer parts can
damage them. Therefore, a computer fan is fitted inside the CPU box.
It is used to cool the different parts when the computer is on.
The fan pulls cool air into the cabinet and blows out the hot air from inside.

c Explain the importance of the motherboard

Ans It is used to connect and control other components.
It is a thin metal plate that holds the processor and other components.

d Differentiate between RAM and ROM.

Ans RAM ROM
1. Random Access Memory 1. Read-only Memory

2. RAM is expensive 2. ROM is cheaper

3. RAM is high speed device. 3. ROM is slow speed device
4. Data in RAM can be modified, erased, or 4. Data in ROM can only be read; it cannot
read. be modified or erased.
5. Ram is volatile memory. 5. Rom is non-volatile memory.

e Reena has created a project using Open Office Writer in her home computer. She wants to
copy this project file to her school computer. Which storage device would be the most
suitable? Give reasons for your answer.
Ans Reena should use pen drive. As pen drive is the smallest portable device. She should use pen drive.

f How is the speed of a computer's processor related to its performance?

Ans The speed of a computer's processor determines how quickly it can execute instructions and complete tasks.
The higher the speed of the computer, the faster it executes instructions.

g What is the need for a power supply unit in a computer?

Ans Computers are generally plugged into our usual electricity supply outlets. However, the electricity supplied
by these outlets is not suitable for computers as it supplies high voltage. The power supply unit converts the
high-voltage electrical power supply to a low-voltage supply suitable for various computer devices.

h What is the need for the computer fan inside the computer?
Ans Due to the flow of current through the computer parts, they can get heated. Excessive heating of computer
parts can damage them. Therefore, a computer fan is fitted inside the CPU box. It is used to cool the different
parts when the computer is ON.

i What is Random Access Memory (RAM), and how is it used by a computer?

Ans RAM is A part of the main memory used by the computer to store data and programs temporarily while they
are being used. It is volatile, which means it stores this data only when the computer is ON. The data stored in
the RAM is erased when the computer is switched OFF.

j Differentiate between PROM, EPROM and EEPROM.

Ans PROM: (Programmable Read-Only Memory): It is a type of ROM in which programs and data are
stored initially only once, after which they cannot be erased.
EPROM: (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory): It is a type of ROM in which stored data
can be erased and new data can be stored multiple times.
EEPROM (Electrically Programmable Read-Only Memory): This is a type of ROM in which data
can be erased and new data stored multiple times. However, EEPROM requires electric signals to
erase its contents.

Q.5 Write the functions of the following components inside a computer.

a Motherboard- To connect and control other components

b Processor - To take the input from the input devices, execute instructions, store the results, and send the
result to the output devices
c Ports - To connect external devices such as a mouse, keyboard and other devices to the CPU
d To store all applications and files, we create and save them while using the applications.
