CHAPTER 3
ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF TWO AND HALF STOREYED R.C BUILDING
3.1. Profile of proposed Residential Building
The profile of this structure is listed as follows:
Type of building Residential Building
Type of occupancy Residential
Shape of building Square
Dimensions of building : Maximum length = 41 ft
Maximum width — = 39 ft
Height of building Bottom storey height= 11 ft
Typical storey height= 11 ft
Overall height = = 32
Height / width 0.97
3.2, Mate
Properties of Proposed Residential Building
Material properties used for proposed building are as follows:
(1) Analysis property data
Weight per unit volume of conerete = 150 pef
Modulus of elasticity = 29 * 10° Ib/in?
(2) Design property data
Bending reinforcement yield stress (f,) = 40,000 psi
Shear reinforcement yield stress () = 40,000 psi
500 psi
Conerete compressive strength (f')
3.3. Loading Considerations
Loading considerations are required for the structure analysis of proposed
residential building, All loading considerations are based on ACI 318-08,24
3.3.1, Dead Load
In this structural analysis, dead loads are used as follows:
(1) Unit weight of concrete = 150 pof
(2) Finishing load =20 psf
(3) Suspended load = 10 psf
(4) 4% thk; brick wall weight = 50 psf
3.3.2. Live Load
In this structural analysis, live loads are as follows:
(1) Live load on stair case = 40 psf
(2) Live load on roof =20 psf
(3) Live load on residential = 40 psf
3.4, Load Combinations
The design load combinations are the various combinations of the load
cases for which the structure needs to be checked. These combinations are based on
ACI 318-08

3.7. Design Calculation for Beam.
Assumption for Beam Design:
At failure the maximum strain at the extreme compression fibres is assumed
equal to 0.003 by the ACI Code provision. ACI code indicates that the net tensile strain,
& at nominal strength, within the transition region, shall not be less than 0.004 for
reinforced concrete flexural members without or with an axial load less than 0.10 fo’
‘Ag, where Ag = gross area of the concrete section
For design strength, the shape of the compressive concrete stress distribution
will be assumed to rectangular shape
