WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
PROCESS
STABILITY
&
CAPABILITY?

WHAT IS
PROCESS STABILITY?
Process Stability refers to the
consistency of the process to stay
within the Control Limits. If the
process distribution remains
consistent over time, i.e. the outputs
fall within the range (Process Width),
then the process is said to be stable
or in control. If the Outputs are
spread outside the limits, then the
process is Unstable or Out of Control.

Process Stability refers to the
consistency of the process to
stay within Upper Control Limit
(UCL) and Lower Control Limit
(LCL).

The outputs of any process will
have a mean value. Then the
control Limits for the process are
defined as follows:
Upper Control Limit (UCL) =
Mean + 3 sigma
Lower Control Limit (LCL) =
Mean - 3 sigma

WHAT IS
PROCESS CAPABILITY?
Process Capability is a measure of
the ability of the process to meet
customer specifications. The measure
tells how sound each output is.
Estimating the ppm (defective parts
per million) is a method to measure
process capability. Capability analysis
uses measures like Cp, Cpk, Pp, and
Ppk to determine the process
capability.

Capability Indices (Cp, Cpk) are
metrics used to measure the
process capability. It indicates how
capable the process is in terms of
meeting customer requirements.

EXAMPLE
An insurance claim handling
process where the time taken to
close the claims would be stable
means that the process is
consistent in handling time with
known variations. Unless it is
confirmed to be tough, how do we
ensure that process is robust and
capable of meeting customer
demand?
www.benchmarksixsigma.com
Some claims can breach the SLA
due to unusual behaviour of the
process. So, proactive monitoring
of process stability is the primary
reference, followed by capability.
