COMPONENT 2.

5 INHERITANCE WORKSHEET 1

1. The image shows a pair of homologous chromosomes.

(a) (i) State the meaning of the term homologous.

(ii) Give the term used to describe the position of a gene on a

chromosome.

(iii) On the diagram label a centromere and a chromatid.

(iv) The letters on the image represent the alleles of five different genes.
Complete the labels by adding the term homozygous or
heterozygous to describe each pair of alleles.

(b) The phenotypes represented by the letters of each allele are shown in the
table below. Using the information in the image, state the genotype and
phenotype of this individual for each gene.

Phenotypes of the alleles Genotype of the Phenotype of the

individual individual
R = red r = white
P = prickly p = smooth
A = angular a = curved
B = tall t = short
C = thick c = thin

2. Humans can inherit many conditions, some of which have serious effects on our
health.
(a) Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inherited disease which results in damage to the
nervous system in newborn babies unless treated.
A couple, neither of whom suffered from PKU had a child with this condition.
(i) Use suitable letters to complete the key below.

Type of allele (dominant or Letter to represent

recessive) the allele
The allele for PKU

The allele for not having PKU

(ii) Using the letters you have chosen, state the genotypes of:

I the mother
II the father

(iii) Draw a suitable genetic diagram to show how this couple could have
produced a child with PKU.

(iv) The same couple were expecting a second child. State the probability
of their second child not having PKU.
(b) One form of diabetes insipidus is nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. This is a
genetic condition caused by a dominant allele (N) and affects the kidneys.
A heterozygous sufferer with this condition has a partner who is a non-
sufferer. Draw a suitable genetic diagram and use this to determine the
probability of them having a child who would suffer from nephrogenic diabetes
insipidus.

Percentage probability of having a child with

%
nephrogenic diabetes insipidus

(c) Alport’s Syndrome is another inherited condition which affects the kidneys
and can lead to the retention of fluid in the blood, reduced urine volume and
very high blood pressure.
There are two forms of the disease caused by different alleles:
Type 1 X-linked, dominant
Type 2 autosomal, recessive
A couple, both unaffected by Alport’s Syndrome, had a child with Alport’s
Syndrome. Conclude which type of Alport’s Syndrome the child inherited.
Explain your answer.
