HOMEWORK UNIT 1

Teacher: Saraí Briceño

Names: Guevara Melina, Porras Micaela, Chávez Kevin
And Vargas Viviana

1 Work in pairs
Who are the most famous writers in your country's history? What did they
write?
Response: In my country's history, some of the most famous writers include
William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and George Orwell. William
Shakespeare, for instance, is renowned for his plays and sonnets that explore a
wide range of human emotions and themes. Jane Austen is celebrated for her
novels like "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility," which provide keen
insights into social class and relationships. Charles Dickens is known for his
novels such as "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Oliver Twist," highlighting issues of
poverty and social injustice. George Orwell's works, such as "1984" and "Animal
Farm," delve into political and dystopian themes.

What Shakespeare plays or characters can you name? What do you know
about them?
Response: I can name several Shakespeare plays and characters. Some of his
most famous plays include "Romeo and Juliet," a tragic love story between two
young lovers from feuding families; "Hamlet," the story of a Danish prince seeking
revenge for his father's murder; "Macbeth," a tragedy about the corrupting
influence of ambition; and "Othello," which explores themes of jealousy and
deception. As for characters, there's Romeo and Juliet, the star-crossed lovers;
Hamlet, the tormented prince; Lady Macbeth, known for her ambition and guilt;
and Othello, a noble but tragic figure consumed by jealousy. Shakespeare's
works are known for their rich character development and exploration of complex
human emotions.
2 Ride at the article.
The author explains in the article that Shakespeare's plays are still popular today
for several reasons:
Some people consider him a great storyteller, highlighting the enduring power of
his narratives.
Others believe that the magic of his works lies in the beauty of his poetry, which
continues to captivate audiences.
Some attribute his popularity to the sheer volume of work he produced during a
vibrant time in English history, particularly in the theater.

Critic Harold Bloom's perspective is that Shakespeare introduced something new

to literature by creating characters with relatable personalities. These lifelike
characters and Shakespeare's observations about the human condition
contribute to his universal appeal.

Additionally, Shakespeare's impact on the English language, cultural references,

and understanding of human psychology further solidify his enduring popularity.

In summary, Shakespeare's plays continue to be popular because of their

storytelling, poetic beauty, historical significance, relatable characters, and
profound insights into humanity.

him something else.

5) Work in pairs. Which option(s) (a-c) describes the author's main purpose
for writing this article?
Underline the sentences in the article that tell you this.
A- to explain why Shakespeare is popular today
B-to examine if Shakespeare's reputation is justified
C-to examine Shakespeare's contribution to modern-day English

The author's main purpose is option ´´A´´ because that character is currently
known and many people gave different opinions of what he did to become
famous.
A- to explain why Shakespeare is popular today
Some say he was a great storyteller, others that the magic lies in the beauty of
his poetry. Some say it is simply because
he left us a huge volume of work that was written during a vibrant time in English
history, particularly in the theater.
B-to examine if Shakespeare's reputation is justified
It is justified because a more interesting answer is the one proposed by the critic
Harold Bloom. Bloom argues that Shakespeare gave us something the world had
not seen in literature before: characters with personalities we could identify with.

C-to examine Shakespeare's contribution to modern-day English

Shakespeare's contribution was Shakespeare's influence on everyday modern
language. Take, for example, these commonly used phrases: a foregone
conclusion, coming full circle, it's seen better days, breaking the ice, neither here
nor there, the world is My oyster, a wild goose chase, and love is blind.
