Possibilities, Policies and Partnerships:
A Symposium on:
Financial Inclusion through Mobile Phones
9 October 2009, Gulmohar hall, India Habitat Center, New Delhi Agenda With nearly 440 million subscribers, mobile phones cover nearly 40% of the countrys population. Given the unprecedented coverage, mobile phones are increasingly been seen as agents of socio-economic development reaching out opportunities to people and places way beyond any other instrument. Financial inclusion is the key to socio-economic development and it was a matter of time that people would start talking about and thinking about marrying financial inclusion with mobile phones. While the potential of mobile phones as a powerful instrument of reaching out financial services to the rural areas has been known and recognized for sometime, the recent announcement by the Prime Ministers office has given the issue a sense of urgency. Of course, today we have the technology to deliver financial services to the remotest parts of the country; but technology by itself cannot guarantee the success of what is essentially a socio-economic process. What is needed is progressive policies and strong partnerships between Telecom service providers, Banks and technology enablers. The symposium will address three key issues of policy, possibilities and partnerships which we believe would ensure the success of financial inclusion through mobile phones: 10:30-11:00 hrs Registration & Tea
