HST222N: HISTORY (MEDIEVAL INDIAN HISTORY/ MEDIEVAL KASHMIR HISTORY)


Credits: Theory-04, Tutorial: 02
Objectives/ Expected Learning Outcomes:

The course discusses the establishment and expansion of Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire in India.
The engagement of the state with the people and functioning of administration has been accorded due
space. The changes and regulations of socio-economic structures by these regimes are expected to be
brought out. The paper attempts to showcase rich indo-Islamic heritage and devotional movements of
medieval India which are described as the bedrock of composite culture of India. The study of working
of Maratha government makes paper diverse. The socio- cultural effloresces of Kashmir under Sultan
Zain-ul-Abidin are highlighted. The role played by Sufis and Rishis in medieval Kashmir has been
discussed. The Mughal conquest of Kashmir and its economic consequences have been incorporated.
The foundation of Afghan and Sikh rule in Kashmir has been highlighted. The paper attempts to offer
a holistic view of rich history of medieval India.
The students are expected to:

a. Engage with the medieval period in Indian history.


b. Develop an understanding of the existing power relations and administrative stracture.
c. Appreciate the role played by Sufis and Bhaktas in the making of composite culture of India.
d. Understand changes and continuities in Kashmir history.
e. Move from courts and kings to socio-economic forces that shaped the medieval way of life.
