Organizational Method: Topical Order
Topic : Donating blood
General Purpose : To persuade
Specific Purpose : To persuade my audience to donate blood
Central Idea : We should donate blood as it helps save lives, gives us medical
treatment benefits, and reduces the risk of diseases.
INTRODUCTION:
I. Imagine that one day you were driving back to your home after the long wait of the
interstate travel ban. You are cruising down the road and suddenly, bam! A car on the
opposite side had crashed into you. You woke up in a hospital and the doctor said you
lost a lot of blood during the accident.
II. There is an unsung hero that saved your life and that hero is the blood donor. You were
on death’s door but an unselfish act by a stranger you don’t even know has helped save
your life.
III. According to (Bernama, 2018), 2,000 bags of blood are needed per day in hospitals
throughout Malaysia. One unit of blood is equivalent to 450 ml and in a day, hospitals
require around 900 litres of blood to save lives.
IV. Although there has been growing awareness on blood donation amongst Malaysians,
less than three percent of the population are regular donors.
V. For your information, I am a blood donor since 2017 and have donated more than 10
times. I also have organized blood donation campaigns with the collaboration of
Sultanah Bahiyah, Kedah and Tuanku Fauziah Hospital, Perlis that have saved
approximately 450 lives. Today, I will give an insight on why should we donate blood.
VI. We should donate blood as it helps save lives, gives us medical treatment benefits, and
reduces the risk of diseases.
(Signpost: Let’s begin with donating blood helps save lives)
BODY:
I. Firstly, we should donate blood because it helps save lives.
A. According to USA’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI),
volunteering to donate blood is a safe and uncomplicated process that comprises
of a donor giving one of the following blood products which are whole blood,
red blood cells, plasma, or platelets. These products are transfused to patients
according to their medical needs.
1. According to (Kaos Jr., 2020), the Health Director General Datuk Dr.
Noor Hisham Abdullah and the Ministry of Health urged Malaysians to
donate blood due to blood shortages at blood centres.
a. The blood supply at the centres are at a distressing rate as more
elective services start again in hospitals throughout the nation
after the Movement Control Order has been loosen.
b. The Director General also made clear of the sudden shock of
blood supply needs in the surgical units as it has increased from
an average of 9,000 bags per week to 13,076 bags during the
conditional MCO.
2. Moreover, a donation of one bag of blood can save up to three lives.
There is an array of diseases that requires blood transfusions such as
leukaemia and even in cases such as road accidents that can lead to
severe blood need. Datuk Dr. Hisham also mentioned in his speech that
there is an increase of 5 to 10% in road accidents.
a. Leukaemia is a type of cancer that occurs in the bone marrow,
the part in which helps to produce blood. This disease can affect
the production of normal blood cells in the body and many
chemotherapy drugs also impedes the blood production. Thus,
almost all leukaemia patients need blood transfusions during
their care (Leukaemia & Lymphoma Society, n.d)
3. If you ask me, try to think how often do road accidents occur in Malaysia
on a daily basis and imagine how many patients that suffer from diseases
that need blood transfusions such as leukaemia and kidney disease. They
rely on our help in saving their lives and helping them live. Don’t you
think that donating blood can save lives too?
(Signpost: After that, donating blood can give us medical treatment benefits.)
II. Secondly, we should donate blood because it provides us with medical treatment
benefits.
A. Based on a research (WHO, 2005), in Malaysia, the cost of per bed day in a
public hospital facility that provides drugs and food amount to RM205.30 while
the cost of an outpatient visit with the same level of service of providing drugs
and food amount to RM84.63 per visit. This can be a burden to some people
that have a low level of income and if the stay in the hospital is for a longer
period of time, it accumulates and can be overwhelming.
1. (National Blood Centre of Malaysia, 2018) states that the blood donors
who donate in general hospitals are entitled to get a certain degree of free
treatment in general hospitals dependent upon the number of times that
they have donated according to the table provided in the circular letter by
the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
a. The level of free treatments ranges from a one-time donor that
can receive free outpatient and medical treatment, excluding x-
ray and surgery and stay in second-class wards for a period of 4
months, to a donor that has donated more than 50 times that can
receive free outpatient and medical treatment and stay in first-
class wards for 10 years based on the circulation provided by the
Ministry.
b. Based on the incentives that the Health Ministry provides to
donors and based on WHO’s research, donors can save
thousands of ringgits even up to millions.
c. This incentive can be useful in your dying time of need and in
serious emergency cases that can save you evidently a lot of
money in the long run.
2. In my opinion, there’s a big opportunity to save financially when you
donate blood. Why not seize the opportunity to benefit from your
donation because in the end your blood replenishes itself back after
approximately 8-weeks and there are no significant physical changes
after your donation?
(Transition: That was how donating blood can give us medical treatment benefits, let’s move
on to how it reduces the risk of diseases.)
III. Lastly, we should donate blood as it reduces the risk of having diseases.
A. Based on an article in the Journal of Blood Medicine (Uche et al., 2013), a
regular blood donor may be protected against cardiovascular (heart) diseases as
they showed a significantly lower average of total cholesterol and low-density
lipoprotein levels as compared to non-donors.
1. According to the (World Health Organization, 2017), the leading cause
of death globally is cardiovascular diseases which killed 17.9 million
people in 2016 and accounts to 31% of the global deaths.
a. Out of the 17.9 million deaths, 85% of it are due to heart attack
and stroke. Heart attacks and strokes are usually serious attacks
that are usually caused by a blockage that stops the blood from
flowing to the heart or brain. The most typical reason for a heart
attack or stroke is an accumulation of fatty deposits on the inner
walls of the blood vessels that supply the heart or brain. Strokes
also can happen due to a bleeding from a blood vessel in the brain
or from blood clots.
b. Thus, as the research shown, donating blood can help us reduce
the risk of getting cardiovascular diseases that leads to a painful
death.
2. Other than that, based on an article by the (Centres for Disease Control
and Prevention, 2003), blood donors go through the same process as a
phlebotomy which just means that a doctor or a nurse takes your blood.
Through this procedure, it can help in reducing the risk of
Hemochromatosis.
a. Hemochromatosis is a disease that happens due to an iron
overload in the body. Over 1 million people suffer from this
disease in the USA. This disease can lead to serious
complications if left untreated. It can lead to problems such as
liver cancer, heart disease, and infertility. By donating blood, we
can reduce our iron levels and lower the risk of having this
disease.
3. I believe that other than improving other’s life quality by donating blood,
we can improve our own by taking preventive measures to lower the risk
of contracting these diseases. Furthermore, it can act as a mini check-up
for you to screen for diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis.
CONCLUSION:
I. In movies, superheroes are often depicted as having unimaginable or illogical
superpowers like super strength or the ability to fly, but real-world heroes aren’t
wearing tights or capes. The real superheroes of this world exist inside all of us if we
allow it. We can also save the lives of others.
II. To the unsung heroes of the medical world that saves the lives of others without
prejudice, I bid thank you and happy belated World Blood Donor Day.
III. We should donate blood as it helps save lives, gives us medical treatment benefits, and
reduces the risk of diseases.
IV. Well? Ask yourself, what’s holding you back from joining this great cause? That small
voice in your head that whispers fear and inaction into your ears may be the death of
someone and can be the death of you.
