Biography
Stephen William Hawking was the son of Isobel Hawking and Frank
Hawking, a biological researcher. He also has two younger sisters,
Philippa and Mary, and an adopted brother, Edward.
When Stephen Hawking was eight years old, his family moved to St.
Albans, a town about 20 kilometers north of London. At the age of
eleven he went to St. Albans, and then to the University of Oxford,
his father's former college. He wanted to study mathematics, even
though his father would have preferred medicine. Since Mathematics
was not available at that University, he leaned towards Physics
instead. After three years and not much work, he was awarded a first
class degree in Natural Sciences.
Later, Stephen went to Cambridge to research Cosmology, at that
time there was no one working in that area at Oxford. After obtaining
his PhD he became the first research fellow and later a Visiting
Professor at Gonville and Caius College. After leaving the Institute of
Astronomy in 1973, Stephen entered the Department of Applied
Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in 1979, and held the position
of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge
for thirty years, from 1979 until his retirement on 1 October. of 2009.
Stephen Hawking remains an active part of the University of
Cambridge and maintains an office in the Department of Applied
Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. His title is Director of
Research at the Center for Theoretical Cosmology.
Regarding his work, Stephen Hawking has worked on the basic laws
that govern the universe. With Roger Penrose he showed that
Einstein's General Theory of Relativity implies time and space would
have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes. These
results indicated that it was necessary to unify General Relativity
with Quantum Theory, the other great scientific development of the
first half of the 20th century. One consequence of such unification
that he discovered was that black holes must not be completely
black, but must emit radiation and eventually evaporate and
disappear. Another conjecture is that the universe has no edges or
limits in imaginary time. This would imply that the way the universe
began is completely determined by the laws of science.
Hawking's theories went against the grain of contemporary scientific
belief, but he became world famous with the publication of a popular
science book in 1988, 'A Brief History of Time', which was on the
British Sunday Times best-seller list. for 237 weeks and sold millions
of copies.
Professor Hawking holds twelve honorary doctorates. He was
awarded the CBE in 1982 and was made a Companion of Honor in
1989. He is the recipient of numerous awards, medals and prizes, is a
Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the US National Academy
of Sciences.
Stephen Hawking, shortly after his 21st birthday, was diagnosed with
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a form of neurodegenerative disease.
Despite being wheelchair-bound and relying on an automated voice
system for communication, he continues to combine family life (he
has three children and three grandchildren) and his research in
theoretical physics along with an extensive program of travel and
public lectures. .
Stephen Hawking died on March 14, 2018 at the age of 76 at his
home in Cambridge, about eighty kilometers from London, after
complications derived from his neurological condition, amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (ALS).
He was a great scientist and a brilliant man whose courage,
persistence, sensitivity and great sense of humor inspired people
around the world. His extraordinary work and legacy will endure over
time.
