Microsoft is a multinational company focused on the technology sector,
responsible for providing a wide range of high-quality software and hardware. In
addition, it is a pioneering company in the development of new services and
technologies, standing out among the most prestigious brands in the world. This
company allows us to facilitate all types of work at a professional level and provide
the best operating system design. The company develops, manufactures, licenses
and supports personal computers, servers, electronic devices and services. Its best-
known products are the Microsoft Windows operating system, the Microsoft Office
suite, Internet browsers, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge. Its flagship products
are the Xbox video game consoles and the Microsoft Surface line of touchscreen
hardware devices. In 2016, it was the largest software company in the world by
revenue and one of the most valuable in the global market ( web.archive.org . March
31, 2012). They have electronic products rated as the best in the world, so safety and
excellence are always something you can count on. Its main products on the market
are the Office office suite and its Windows operating system, being highly valued
alternatives today. Also, its range of laptop and computer products has managed to
position itself adequately in the market.
Microsoft has been the subject of controversy in the computer industry since
1980. Its business strategy has been criticized, often described by the company itself
with the motto of "Adopt, extend and extinguish." Microsoft initially adopts a standard
or product, then produces a version of the product that is incompatible with that
standard, ultimately eliminating and preventing competitors from using new versions
of the product. These tactics have led to multiple corporate and government lawsuits
against the company, often on multiple occasions. Microsoft has been called an "iron
hand in a kid glove", in reference to accusations against the company for the work
carried out by its employees as this can be harmful to health. This description was
first used in a Seattle Times magazine article in 1989 and has subsequently been
used by Microsoft employees to describe the company (Microsoft Systems Journal.
August 1997).
With the release of Windows 8, Microsoft began requiring OEM devices to ship
with UEFI system firmware, which by default is configured to only allow the execution
of operating system binaries digitally signed by Microsoft (UEFI Secure Boot). . There
is concern that this requirement will hinder the use of alternative operating systems
1
such as Linux. In a post about Secure Boot on the Building Windows 8 blog,
Microsoft developer Tony Mangefeste indicated that vendors would provide means to
customize Secure Boot, stating that "At the end of the day, the customer is in control
of their PC. Microsoft's philosophy is to provide customers with the best experience
first and allow them to make decisions themselves" Noyes, Katherine (January 18,
2012).
Free software advocates are concerned about the creation of the Trusted
Computing Platform Alliance (TCPA), a coalition of companies including Microsoft
and Intel that has promoted the alliance, which they say can improve security and
privacy on users' computers. , a strategy called trusted computing. TCPA has been
viewed by its critics as a means of allowing software developers to impose certain
types of restrictions on their software. Major media corporations (including movie and
record companies), along with computer companies such as Microsoft and Intel, are
planning to make your computer obey them instead of you (Stallman-Richard, 2002).
On the other hand; Just as there are advantages, it also has certain
disadvantages. An example would be that Microsoft products usually have a fairly
short lifespan. Therefore, to stay updated on a technological level, it will always be
necessary to constantly acquire new alternatives. In addition, all Microsoft services
and products have extremely strict terms, which indicate that it is prohibited to modify
their products for any type of purpose. Therefore, alternatives can be considered that
are difficult to modify to adapt them to any type of style or need that may be required.
The main Microsoft Office tools will support you in carrying out everything you intend
2
to do. One of these tools is Microsoft Word, which is a private program that is part of
the Windows office suite, the so-called Microsoft Office, being the software that
provides users with the ability to process texts, that is, it makes it possible to create,
editing, modification, storage and sending of texts, which are encoded and ordered
using certain formats. These formats allow you to adjust the typography, letter size,
add graphics, images, etc. It was developed by Richard Brodie and Charles Simonyi,
hired by Bill Gates and Paul Allen (founders of Microsoft) in 1981. Brodie and
Simonyi were programmers for the Xerox company, and participated in the Xerox
bravo project, the first word processor developed using the WYSIWYG technique
(what you see is what you get), which allows the user to view computer the lines of
text that you are entering. Thanks to the pioneering work of Brodie and Simonyi, the
first version of Microsoft Word came onto the market in 1983, which was dedicated to
computers with the MS-DOS operating system. Subsequently, Microsoft Word was
updated and modified to fulfill various office functions on Windows computers, and it
was also made compatible with other operating systems such as Macintosh and
Unix, and was sold independently of the Microsoft suite.
In 2009, Microsoft Word was the absolute leader in that market sector, with around
500,000,000 users (2008 figures); and although he has already turned 25 years old,
(Barrapunto.com; October 28, 2008) and continues his leadership; But web-based
word processors and open source solutions began to gain ground.
Within the Microsoft office suite, Microsoft Word is the program that serves
exclusively to process texts, so users are able to write, read, modify, decorate,
design any type of text as they see fit, whether for personal needs. professional,
work, etc. Therefore, through word processing, Microsoft Word makes it possible to
carry out the following activities: The creation of texts is the most used function of
Microsoft Word, however, it is not limited to the orderly introduction of paragraphs
and lines of words. with letters of various colors, fonts, shapes and sizes, as it also
makes it possible to add tables, graphs, images, equations, etc. Additionally, it
provides users with the ability to add their own or preset style or layout to the
worksheets. Once you have a file with a .doc or .docx extension, whether your own or
someone else's, with Microsoft Word it is possible to access said file and make
modifications, ranging from changing the font to adding comments. , that is, they
have the same text creation functions. Therefore, starting from an original file you can
3
obtain a new file, which will be modified according to certain reasons or needs. Once
the creation or editing of documents is complete, Microsoft Word allows you to save
the file in different extensions (.docx, .pdf, .xps, etc.), even automatically, generating
an emergency save. In addition, Microsoft Office can be synchronized to an Outlook
account, allowing documents to be sent directly there. In fact, users can create
and/or edit documents collectively and simultaneously on the Microsoft Office online
platform.
4
Word is made up of coded rules called Macros, which indicate how an input
sequence should be mapped to an output sequence.
The most common and outstanding Excel features are its presentation in grids
called cells, its calculation automation functions with numerous formulas and the
possibility of creating graphical presentations. At least basic use of Excel has
become an almost mandatory requirement in the Curriculum Vitae of anyone who
wants to be hired for a conventional job; More than an extra skill, knowing how Excel
works is a necessity. It is probably the most important software in any workplace that
uses computers and is one of the most used programs by companies, companies
and small businesses, especially in the accounting area. Its functions as a
spreadsheet allow many facilities for keeping track of financial activities, as well as its
options for organizing information, both numerical and alphabetical data, for later
presentation in reports, balances, tables and graphs.
5
It works like a spreadsheet made up of rows and columns divided by cells, and
where various arithmetic operations can be carried out, as well as with numbers and
text. That is, add, subtract, multiply, etc. The cells are identified with a letter and a
number, so each one has a unique name, and you can enter numbers, letters and
graphics in Excel. Columns are identified with letters and rows with numbers. Simple
and complex calculations can be done automatically by entering formulas in the
corresponding cells, you just have to place the equal sign (=) before the formula. In
formulas, you can also reference other cells to include their value in calculations.
Example: =A1+A2.
With all these tools, PowerPoint helps us capture the attention of those to
whom our material is presented. The use of PowerPoint has become very
widespread, especially among executives, business people and students, but the
range of uses is becoming broader and more accessible. For example; in political
campaigns, advertising campaigns, explaining research, expressing facts, making
monthly balances, government promotions, etc.
6
Unlike Microsoft Excel, which is used for data analysis and performing
calculations using formulas; Access is most useful for collecting, sorting, and
manipulating large amounts of data. It can be used to create a database of students
attending a school, event management, home inventory, contact manager, project
management database, sales pipeline, business account accounting and more.
Other important Microsoft tools are: Design with Publisher, Outlook and
OneNote. Microsoft Publisher is a design program for both print and electronic
publications. Its main objective is to facilitate desktop publishing for users with little
experience or knowledge of graphic design. It achieves this thanks to a very simple
interface, similar to Microsoft Word, a basic object insertion system and a very visual
work area. All the tools included in this application are designed to facilitate the
design and composition of publications in very different formats. These are some
examples: Bulletins, signs, postcards, envelopes, menus, event programs, labels,
business cards and much more.
To create any of these projects, Microsoft Publisher offers two ways. The first,
use a blank document. If you opt for this option, you will have to take care of the
design and content. The second, use the templates included in your gallery. All of
them come with a predefined design and structure. In this case, it is only necessary
7
to modify the content to adapt it to the needs of your publication. If you use this
application, it is necessary to download its installer. Remembering that, as it is part of
Microsoft Office, other tools such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint are included. To
activate this software it is necessary to purchase a license. As an alternative method,
the company offers a monthly or annual subscription with some additional benefits,
such as online file storage, access to all updates unlimitedly, and technical support to
resolve questions and problems.
The main benefits of Microsoft Publisher are its rich feature set, ease of use,
and seamless integration with other Microsoft applications. Publisher features
professional-level effects for text, shapes and images, its ability to use high-resolution
image backgrounds, its mail merge tools, customization tools, drag and drop image
import and sharing, ruler detailed information and guides for precise measurements,
document sharing capabilities, default cloud saving, ability to save high resolution
files using common image formats, and import photos from online albums such as
Facebook and Flickr.
OneNote has just celebrated 10 years since its launch back in 2003, however
there are many people who do not know it and even fewer use it. Microsoft Office
OneNote, or simply OneNote, is a program developed to facilitate note-taking,
information gathering, and multi-user collaboration. OneNote allows you to place
notes on pages that are organized into tabs and pads and offers the ability to add
drawings, diagrams, photographs and multimedia elements such as hyperlinks,
audio, video, webcam captures, voice recordings and scanned images. It also allows
you to create a virtual printer to send files or documents from other programs. The
product was launched in
2003 and was not initially included in Microsoft Office. Although OneNote is most
commonly used on laptops or desktop PCs, it has additional features that allow it to
be used on a tablet via a stylus, which in some environments is more appropriate
than keyboards.
Just like these, there are other Microsoft Office applications that are very
useful. It is always important to know how to use these tools that will make your work
easier or that can get you out of trouble and that are applicable to daily life to all
school, business or entrepreneurship activities. Each person can use these tools to
facilitate their daily activities. For example, a doctor could use Microsoft Word to write
a scientific work or a thesis since the tool has corrections and autotexts that allow
said work to be accelerated and improved. It will allow you to print and correct
spelling, insert images, insert tables, borders, various formats, colors and fonts to
give it a more professional finish. Excel also has suitable functions for administrators,
accountants and all those who want, for example, to manage their personal finances.
This tool allows the use of advanced statistical and arithmetic functions to analyze
large volumes of information and generate graphs to represent the results.
PowerPoint will allow, among other things, the creation of slides that synthesize
scientific work to be presented at an athenaeum or conference through simple and
intuitive functions, using images or videos that clearly express the ideas. Thus finding
a very wide variety of processes in each of the functions; functions that have
increased throughout the versions. Additionally, Microsoft recognizes the urgent need
to protect ecosystems around the world and reduce carbon emissions from the
creation, distribution and disposal of waste. Therefore, it announces its goal of
achieving 'zero waste' in direct operations, products and packaging by 2030.
