GOLBERG HEALTH QUESTIONNAIRE GHQ-12 The GHQ-12 : It is a test with adequate psychometric
properties as a screening method for minor psychiatric disorders. It is an instrument that is easy to
administer due to its brevity and ease of filling out and does not require qualified training for its
application. It was conceived as a self-administered questionnaire, aimed at evaluating the current
situation of the examinee. It covers four fundamental psychiatric areas: depression, anxiety, social
inadequacy and hypochondria. In Chile, it is validated and has been widely used for depression
screening, which is why it is recommended to be used in all health system consultants aged 15
years and over, as a self-applied screening instrument, considering suspicion of a mental disorder,
a score equal to or greater than 5 points. The instrument can be applied in any of the usual
consultations at the primary health facility or self-applied by the consultants in the waiting room.
In the latter case, the consultant will deliver the completed questionnaire to the professional or
technician with whom he or she has the consultation or control time.

Interpretation: The first 2 alternatives in each question are assigned a score of 0 and the last 2
alternatives in each question are assigned a score of 1. 0 to 4 points: absence of psychopathology
5 to 6 points: suspicion of subthreshold psychopathology 7 to 12 points: indicative of the presence
of psychopathology.

Procedures: With a score equal to or greater than 5, the consultant must be referred to a doctor
to confirm or rule out mental pathology. If the doctor confirms mental pathology, the consultant
must be admitted to the Mental Health Program for comprehensive evaluation and initiation of
treatment. If the doctor confirms mental pathology with a score greater than 7 and the consultant
also presents risk factors for mental pathology, mental pathology refractory, high suicidal risk or
psychotic symptoms, it should be referred to a specialty.
