DESCRIPTION
The celebration of Mother's Day since its origins has been closely related to the recognition of the Virgin Mary as Mother of
Jesus and mother of Christians. Since ancient Greece, when the Greeks paid tribute to Rhea, for them a goddess and mother of
other gods, Christians transformed this festival into a tribute that honored the Virgin Mary. In the 20th century this
commemoration would receive official status from Anna M. Jarvis. After a family gathering on the occasion of the third
anniversary of her mother's death, this American teacher had the idea of dedicating a day to all mothers. Anna Jarvis continued
her campaign for “Mother's Day” and finally on May 10, 1908 this date was publicly celebrated. Today we know and value the
Virgin Mary as Mother of God and also our mother.
