Child Development Assessment
(EDI)
What is it?
It is a screening tool, designed and validated in
Mexico for the early detection of
neurodevelopmental problems in children under 5
years of age. This test allows us to detect
developmental and neurodevelopmental problems
and all children who are considered healthy. All this
because it is known that clinical medical judgment
is not sufficient for timely detection of these
problems, which is why these tests exist.
Who can perform an EDI test?
It can be applied by doctors and nursing staff.
Physical therapists, psychologists and all health
personnel who are trained in performing the test.
At what age is the EDI test performed?
It constitutes part of the evaluation of healthy
children, however in Mexico there are mandatory
ages to apply it. Below in the graph you can see
the age range of mandatory application.
(Children's Hospital of Mexico Federico Gomez,
2012)
Age range Mandatory Application
1-2m 1m
5-7m 6m
16-18m 18m
25-31m 30m
37-48m 42m
49-60m 60m
Its mode of application is through questions to the
primary caregiver or parents, and also through
direct observation of certain skills that the child has
to achieve during the test.
It is essential to apply the test at well-child check-
ups and in the suggested mandatory age ranges.
To select the age group to which the evaluated
child belongs, it is necessary to calculate the
corrected age in children resulting from
pregnancies of 37 weeks of gestation or less and
up to two years of age, this with the purpose to
evaluate each child's abilities that they should have
and avoid errors when subjecting them to
evaluation of activities that do not correspond to
their corrected age. (Martinez, 2018)
There are two ways to apply the EDI test items:
Guided Questions . The Item is investigated by
questioning the mother, father or caregiver.
Observation of the Child : The Item is
investigated by examining the child's behavior. The
evaluator will find two asterisks (**) in the items
that require evaluation of the child.
The EDI test has the following coding system:
MG: Gross Motor
MF : Fine Motor
LE: Language
OS : Social
CO: Knowledge
ALA : Warning Signs
ALE : Warning Signs
FRB : Risk Factors
EN : Neurological Examination.
Each EDI Test Item is scored individually, following
a very simple format with only two possible
answers:
Does it or has it
Doesn't or doesn't have it I Yo
In all directed questions it is important to verify the
frequency of the behavior's appearance, so the
answer is scored based on the following:
He does it always or most of the time.
He doesn't do it or he does it very rarely.
Yo
Yo
All questions marked with ** (Child observation
mode) must be observed during the application of
the test.
Some Items that must be observed may require:
• The child must be shown how to perform the
activity or if he or she does not perform it
correctly, the instruction must be repeated to
ensure that he or she cannot perform it even
though it has been understood correctly.
EDI Test Structure
Block 1 : Identification .
Age Group: defines the group to which the child
belongs. In children born before 37 weeks and
under 2 years of age, the corrected age calculation
must first be carried out to apply the test that
corresponds to this and NOT to the chronological
Age.
• Child identification data
• Child's Age : exact age in years and
months.
• Corrected age: Corrected age in year and
months when required.
• Data of the person who takes it to the
evaluation and age.
• Belonging to any indigenous and non-
Spanish speaking population group :
indicate the need for a translator to apply
the EDI test.
• Application Date .
Block 2 : Evaluation of the 5 Axes .
Axis What is evaluated?
Biological risk factors
Mother's age, problems during pregnancy or at birth
Warning signs Aspects that could suggest a problem
Development areas Evaluates the motor, language, social, cognitive and adaptiv
areas
Warning signs If at least one is present, a quick reference and assessment
required.
Neurological examination Movements of the face, eyes and body; and the size (growt
the head
Block 3 : Global EDI Qualification .
The EDI test is completely qualitative. At the end of
its application, based on the results obtained in the
5 axes of the test, the child must be classified
within the category to which it belongs.
To calculate the chronological Age, a subtraction is
made between the evaluation date and the child's
date of birth:
Year Month Day
Evaluation Date
Birthdate
Chronological age
