ABSTRACT

NAME: JOHN KARENGE KAMBERA

INDEX NUMBER: 5781020256

Coriander originated from Italy. Its scientific name is coriandrum santivum. The leaves are
variable in shape, broadly lobed at the base of the plant and slender. Leaves are used for
garnishing dishes, flavoring soup and making chutneys. Coriander thrives well on a well-
drained fertile soil with a temperature range of 18 0 C – 25OC and annual rainfall of 75mm –
100mm is ideal. The objectives of the project was to determine the yield to be obtained on a
3x4m plot at TENP, to determine whether the soil at TENP are favorable for growing of
coriander and to determine whether the spacing of 30cm in each row has any effect on the
yield. The project took a duration of 6 weeks.

I was allocated a plot measuring 3x4m where I did land clearing by the use of slasher to make
cultivation easier. I carried out primary cultivation for initial opening of the land by use of
Jembe, after one week, I carried out secondary cultivation to break soil clods to produce
required tilting and I did the tertiary operation for production of an even, uniform surface to
promote uniform planting. I used row-planting method in a spacing of 30cm in each row.
I did weeding to discourage competition of nutrient among the plant and weeds. I controlled
disease by use of certified seed, I controlled white fly by watering my plot on daily basis, I
conserved soil and water through mulching. I did watering on daily basis to enhance growth,
I did thinning on the overcrowded plants and I applied DAP fertilizer during planting.

I harvested coriander on 17/03/2024 and I obtained 4.8kg, I find out the soil at TENP favour
the growth of coriander since there was high yield obtained at the 3x4 plot. The spacing of
30cm apart has resulted to high yield since there was no competition in sharing of nutrients. I
would recommend keeping the soil moist but avoiding overwatering, as coriander dislikes
soggy conditions.
