Black Friday Frenzy and Reflection

Black Friday shopping started earlier than usual this year, with many stores opening on Thanksgiving Day. The early openings were successful, with large profits for many retailers. While electronics were popular sellers, people focused more on true bargains rather than ordinary purchases. Some shoppers waited for hours in long lines and crowds inside stores were chaotic as people rushed to get limited items, with at least one incident of pepper spraying. The frenzied consumerism seems at odds with the Christmas season of peace and giving.

Black Sunday
John 4:7-15 The words of the song state, If you want it, here it is. Come and get it, but your better hurry cause its going fast. Every year, in recent years, the Friday following Thanksgiving has been called Black Friday. It is all about profits for the retail business. Every year the beginning, or store opening time has gotten earlier. Well, this year, it didnt even wait for Friday. Many stores sought to catch turkey-filled customers while they were still in their after dinner stupor. It seems to have worked. Black Thursday/Friday reaped large profits for many retail areas. The news media commented that people were buying, but buying with selectivity. It appears that most were seeking true bargains and avoiding the ordinary purchases. Electronics were big sellers, but were not the only area of sizable interest. People were driven to bargains by their desire to have a particular item. So strong was their drive to get that item that they would wait for hours, in long lines, outside of stores. Some set camps. Some hurried to get an early place in line, only to later sell that place to the highest bidder. Sometimes there was even havoc inside of stores. Normally polite and complacent people, pushed and shoved their way to make sure of gaining a limited item. There was even a report of one customer pepperspraying another in order to obtain an item. All of this merchandising, advertising, and customer frenzy would seem contrary to the spirit of a season of peace, love, and giving. Yes, it is. Still, it tells us a lot about ourselves and the value we place on having things. Isnt it something that we will race to the store to buy the latest electronic device, knowing that we will want to replace it almost as soon as we use it. A woman followed her routine of getting water, only to be confronted by a man who would change her life. After she heard what he had to offer, she would never look at getting water the same way again. Think about it. There is a Black Sunday waiting for you. Russ
