Test 11
Read the text and answer the questions.
After my second voyage I was at home for about ten days. One morning Captain William Robinson came to see
me. I had served in another ship where he was the commander in a voyage to Levant. He had already treated me
more like a brother than an inferior officer. He was happy to see me and invited me to join him in a voyage to East-
Indies. I could not reject his proposal.
We set out on the 5th August 1706. After a few days a great storm arose and we were chased by two pirate ships.
We knew that we wouldn’t be able to defend ourselves. The pirates from both ships boarded our ship about the
same time. They tied us with strong ropes and went to search the ship.
I observed among them a Dutchman. He knew from our appearance that we were English. He swore that we should
be tied back and thrown into the sea. I told him who we were and where we had come from. I begged him to tell
the commander to take some pity on us. He repeated his threats and spoke to his companions in Japanese.
The larger of the two pirate ships was commanded by a Japanese captain. He came up to me and asked several
questions. When I answered them he said that he would not like us. The Dutchman insisted that I should be thrown
into the sea. But the Japanese commander refused as he had already made a promise. Later my men were divided
between the two pirate ships. I was put into a small canoe with provisions for eight days and set adrift. When I was
away from the pirates, I discovered by my pocket glass, several islands to the South- East. In about three hours I
reached one of the islands. It was all rocky. But wherever I went, there were bird’s eggs. I made a fire with dry sea-
weed and roasted some eggs. That was my supper. I passed the night under the shelter of a rock.
