This data represents patients admitted to a trauma hospital and diagnosed with
tetraplegia. They have been divided into 2 groups; Young Tetraplegics (YT) and Old
Tetraplegics (OT). Their genders, hospital length of stay and number of days on a
ventilator have been listed for both groups.
Your 2 null hypotheses are:
There is no difference between the hospital length of stay of young tetraplegic
patients and the hospital length of stay of old tetraplegic patients
There is no difference between the number of ventilator days of young tetraplegic
patients and the number of ventilator days of old tetraplegic patients
1. Enter the data into excel (to save time you can select and copy all the data, and click
on the first cell in the excel page and hit paste and it will paste the data for you)
2. Calculate the percentage of gender for the young and old tetraplegic groups and type
in a cell below your data
3. Run a t-test between the hospital length of stay of young tetraplegics vs old
tetraplegics
Data tab
Data Analysis box
Select t-test: Two Sample Assuming Equal Variances as the Analysis Tool, click
OK
Next to Variable 1 Range is a little box, click it
Select YT HosLOS column, including the label, click little box again
Next to Variable 2 Range is a little box, click it
Select OT HosLOS column, including the label, click little box again (Remember, t-
tests are run between the SAME variable of 2 different groups)
Click on the little box in front of Labels (this will tell computer you included the
labels)
The alpha is set automatically at 0.05
Click on little circle in front of Output Range, click on little box
Select a cell where you want the results to appear in your excel file (be careful
and don’t overlap cells that contain something)
Click OK
4. Your results will give you a P one-tail and a P two-tail. Remember from your slides,
you want to look at the P value for the two-tail test to see if there is a statistically
significant difference between the two groups on the variable.
1. TYPE IN A CELL BELOW YOUR RESULTS WHAT YOUR P TWO-TAIL
MEANS, did you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis? Is there a statistically
significant difference between the hospital length of stay between the young and
the old tetraplegic patients?
5. Run a second t-test between the Ventilator Day s of the young tetraplegics vs the
ventilator days of the old tetraplegics following the previous directions.
TYPE IN A CELL BELOW YOUR RESULTS WHAT YOUR P TWO-TAIL
MEANS, did you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis? Is there a statistically
significant difference between the ventilator days between the young and the old
tetraplegic patients?
