GRADE 7 SCIENCE

SUMMER BREAK WORKSHEET

Note: A printout of the worksheet is to be taken and then solved.

I. Choose the correct option

1. Which of the following raw material is available in the air for photosynthesis?
a. Oxygen b. Carbon dioxide c. Nitrogen d. Hydrogen

2. The association where two participating plants mutually benefit each other is called
a. parasitism b. amensalism c. symbiosis d. none of these

3. Variegated leaves are found in

a. Coleus b. Mango c. Crotons d. both a & c

4. Which of these are necessary for photosynthesis to take place?

a. carbon dioxide b. chlorophyll c. water d. All of these

5. Pitcher plant traps insect because

a. it is autotroph b. it is deficient in nitrogen
c. it is a saprotroph d. it lacks chlorophyll

II. Assertion and Reason based questions

Directions: The question below consists of an assertion and a Reason. Use the following key to
choose the appropriate answer.
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.

1. Assertion (A): Plants make their food themselves and are called autotrophs.
Reason (R): Human beings and other animals depend on plants for their food.

2. Assertion (A): The product of photosynthesis is a complex chemical substance called

carbohydrate.
Reason (R): The carbohydrate ultimately gets converted into sugar.

3. Assertion (A): Some bacteria are present in root nodules of leguminous plants.
Reason (R): Rhizobium present in the nodulated roots have symbiotic association with
the leguminous plant.

1
4. Assertion (A): All plants are not autotrophic.
Reason (R): Insectivorous plants cannot synthesize their own food.

5. Assertion (A): All living beings derives energy from plants

Reason (R): All living organisms are directly or indirectly dependent on plants for food

III. Answer the questions after reading the case study

Case Study 1

Take two potted plants of the same kind. Keep one in the dark (or in a black box) for 72
hours and the other in sunlight. Perform iodine test with the leaves of both the plants.
Record the results. Now leave the pot which was earlier kept in the dark, in the sunlight
for 3 – 4 days and perform the iodine test again on its leaves. Plant when placed in sunlight
gives a positive Iodine solution test. The leaves other than green also have chlorophyll.
The large amount of red, brown, and other pigments masks the green color.
Photosynthesis takes place in these leaves also. You often see slimy, green patches in
ponds or stagnant water bodies. These are generally formed by the growth of organisms
called algae. Algae are green in color because they contain chlorophyll which gives them
the green color. Algae can also prepare their own food by photosynthesis.

a. For how many hours does the potted plant needs to be kept in dark?
b. What are the slimy green patches in the pond?
c. Write word equation for photosynthesis.
d. Give a reason for the formation of green patches in a pond?
e. What is the indication of the occurrence of photosynthesis in a plant?

Case Study 2

Saprophytes are the living organisms that live and feed on dead and decaying organisms.
They are considered extremely important in soil biology. They break down the complex
organic matter into simpler substances that are taken up by the plants for various
metabolic activities. Thus, saprophytes play a significant role in the ecosystem. Fungi
are saprophytes. Saprophytes produce filaments. They are devoid of leaves, roots and
stem. They cannot perform photosynthesis and are heterotrophs. They can produce
spores. Saprophytes undergo extracellular digestion to digest the dead and decaying
matter. The saprophytes secrete digestive juices and breakdown the organic matter
around them. The fungi grow tubular structures known as hyphae that branch into the
dead matter and produce digestive enzymes. Mould, is a saprophytic fungus that grows
on decayed organic matter, especially those that are rich in carbohydrates. Mould is
majorly found on stale bread, vegetables, and dung.

a. What mode of nutrition do saprophytes exhibit?

b. Where is mould found?
c. How digestion takes place in a sporophyte?
d. Why are saprophytes significant to ecosystem?
e. Which structure produces digestive juices in fungi?
