Engineering Mechanics- Solved Numericals

1. Two forces act on the hook as shown in figure 1. Determine the magnitude and
direction of the resultant force.

Figure 1

R= √𝐹12 + 𝐹22 + 2𝐹1 𝐹2 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 = √2002 + 5002 + 2 × 200 × 500 × 𝑐𝑜𝑠40°= 665.74 N
𝐹2 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃 500𝑠𝑖𝑛40°
𝑡𝑎𝑛 ∝= =
𝐹1 + 𝐹2 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 200 + 500𝑐𝑜𝑠40°
∝= tan (0.55)= 28.87° w.r.t. 200N force or 11.13° w.r.t. 500N force
-1

2. Find the magnitude of the resultant and its location of the following forces acting
at a point O as shown in figure 2.

Figure 2

∑ 𝐹𝑥 = 200cos30°-300cos45°-350cos40°= -307.04 N

∑ 𝐹𝑦 = 300sin30°+300+300sin45°-350sin40°= 437.16 N

R= √307.042 + 437.162= 534.18 N

tanθ= (437.16/307.04)= 1.42

θ= 54.92°
3. Determine the component of weight of the body shown in figure 3 along inclined
plane (x’ and y’ axes).

Figure 3

Fx’= -0.96kN, Fy’= 1.149kN

4. Knowing that α= 35°, determine the resultant of the three forces shown in figure
4.

Figure 4
5. A force of 50 kN is required to pull a truck along a road. Two forces are applied
on the truck as shown in figure 5. Find the angle made by two forces with the line
of the resultant.

Figure 5
6. Find the resultant for the system of forces shown in figure 6.

Figure 6

7. Four forces acting on a hook are as shown in figure 7. Determine the direction of
the force 150N such that the hook is pulled in x-direction. Determine the resultant
force in x-direction.
Figure 7

∑ 𝐹𝑥 =R,

∑ 𝐹𝑦 =0

-80sin45°+60sin60°+100sin30°+150sinθ°= 0

150sinθ = 45.39

θ=17.61°

∑ 𝐹𝑥 =R

80cos45°+60cos60°+100cos30°+150cos17.61°= R

R= 316.142 N

8. The screw eye in Figure 8 is subjected to two forces, F1 and F2. Determine the
magnitude and direction of the resultant force.

Figure 8

R= √𝐹12 + 𝐹22 + 2𝐹1 𝐹2 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 = √1002 + 1502 + 2 × 100 × 150 × 𝑐𝑜𝑠65°= 212.55 N
𝐹2 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃 150𝑠𝑖𝑛65°
𝑡𝑎𝑛 ∝= =
𝐹1 + 𝐹2 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 100 + 150𝑐𝑜𝑠65°
∝= tan-1(0.832)= 39.76° w.r.t. 100N force
9. The resultant of two forces when they act at right angles is √148 N whereas when
they act at an angle of 60°the resultant is 10N. Determine the magnitude of two
forces.

Case 1- θ= 90°, √148 = √𝐹12 + 𝐹22 + 2 × 𝐹1 × 𝐹2 𝑐𝑜𝑠90° = √𝐹12 + 𝐹22

F12+F22= 148- (1)

Case 2- θ= 60°, 100= √𝐹12 + 𝐹22 + 2 × 𝐹1 × 𝐹2 𝑐𝑜𝑠60° = √𝐹12 + 𝐹22 + 𝐹1 𝐹2

F12+F22+F1F2= 10- (2)

From equations (1) and (2), we have, F1F2= 100-148= -48

(F1+F2)2= F12+F22+2F1F2 = 148 + 2x(-48)= 52

F1+F2= 7.211- (3)

(F1-F2)2= F12+F22-2F1F2 = 148 - 2x(-48)= 244

F1-F2= 15.620- (4)

From equations (3) and (4), we get,

F1= 11.415 N and F2= -4.204 N.

10. Five coplanar forces are acting a point as shown in figure 9. Determine the
magnitude and direction of the resultant.
