The term “disability” lacks a commonly agreed-upon meaning, despite numerous attempts to
establish one. The International Classification of Functioning, impairment and Health (ICF)
developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) considers the social dimensions of
impairment and does not limit its definition to “medical” or “biological” dysfunctions. The WHO
distinguished between the following two essential concepts: Any loss or anomaly in a person’s
physiology, psychology, or physical structure or function—such as paralysis or blindness—is
considered an impairment. Disability is defined as any limitation or absence (due to an
impairment) of the capacity to carry out a task in a way or within a range that is deemed typical
for a human being.
Disability is something imposed on top of our impairments by the way we are unneccessarily
isolated and excluded from full participation in society. As a result, those with disabilities are
marginalized in society. Understanding the difference between a person’s physical impairment
and their social circumstances—referred to as their “disability”—is essential to comprehending
[Link], we define disability as the disadvantage or restriction of activity brought on by a
modern social organization that takes no or little account of people who have physical
impairments and so excludes them from participation in the mainstream of social activities.
Impairment is defined as the loss of all or part of a limb or having a defective limb, organ, or
mechanism of the body. Therefore, physical disability is a specific type of social oppression.
"Taare Zameen Par” is a seminal Indian film directed by Aamir Khan, which provides a poignant
and insightful portrayal of disability, specifically dyslexia. The movie centers on the journey of
an 8-year-old boy, Ishaan Awasthi, who grapples with dyslexia, and it masterfully highlights the
emotional, psychological, and societal challenges faced by individuals with learning disabilities.
Through its sensitive storytelling, the film advocates for a compassionate and inclusive approach
to education and societal attitudes towards disability.
The film’s protagonist, Ishaan, embodies the struggles of a child with dyslexia. His difficulties
with reading, writing, and comprehending academic subjects are initially misunderstood as
laziness or defiance by his parents and teachers. This misinterpretation of his behavior is a
critical point that the film addresses, shedding light on the lack of awareness and understanding
about learning disabilities in society. Ishaan's character development is intricately woven with
scenes that depict his imaginative mind and artistic talent, which are in stark contrast to his
academic performance. This juxtaposition serves to challenge the traditional metrics of
intelligence and success, advocating for a broader and more inclusive definition that recognizes
diverse talents and abilities.
The portrayal of Ishaan’s family dynamics provides a microcosm of societal attitudes towards
disability. His parents, particularly his father, epitomize the high expectations and rigid standards
that are often imposed on children. The father’s insistence on discipline and academic
excellence, without recognizing Ishaan’s unique needs, reflects a common societal tendency to
prioritize conformity over individuality. The emotional strain on Ishaan, resulting from this
pressure, is palpable and underscores the detrimental impact of unrealistic expectations on
children with disabilities. The film also captures the initial denial and eventual acceptance by
Ishaan’s mother, showcasing the journey many parents undergo in understanding and supporting
their child’s unique needs.
"Taare Zameen Par" offers a critical examination of the education system and its handling of
students with disabilities. Ishaan’s experiences at school, marked by ridicule and punishment
from teachers, highlight the systemic failures in accommodating and nurturing students with
learning differences. The film critiques the one-size-fits-all approach to education, which often
marginalizes children who do not conform to conventional learning methods. This portrayal is a
call to action for educators and policymakers to adopt more inclusive and flexible teaching
strategies that recognize and support the diverse needs of all students.
The introduction of Ram Shankar Nikumbh, an unconventional art teacher played by Aamir
Khan, marks a turning point in the film. Nikumbh’s character is instrumental in diagnosing
Ishaan’s dyslexia and providing the necessary support and encouragement for his growth.
Through innovative teaching methods and a deep understanding of Ishaan’s condition, Nikumbh
exemplifies the positive impact that a compassionate and informed educator can have on a child
with disabilities. His approach contrasts sharply with the punitive and insensitive methods of
other teachers, emphasizing the importance of empathy, patience, and creativity in education.
Nikumbh’s belief in Ishaan’s potential and his efforts to cultivate his artistic talents underscore
the transformative power of positive reinforcement and individualized attention.
Art plays a central role in "Taare Zameen Par," serving as a medium of expression and healing
for Ishaan. His affinity for painting becomes a conduit for his emotions and a means of coping
with the challenges posed by his dyslexia. The film beautifully illustrates how art can be a
powerful tool for self-expression and a therapeutic outlet for individuals with disabilities.
Through Ishaan’s artwork, the audience gains insight into his inner world, rich with creativity
and imagination, challenging the conventional perceptions of his abilities. This narrative thread
reinforces the importance of recognizing and nurturing the unique strengths and talents of
individuals with disabilities.
"Taare Zameen Par" stands out for its positive representation of disability, which is often lacking
in mainstream media. By focusing on the personal and emotional journey of a child with
dyslexia, the film fosters empathy and understanding among its audience. It breaks down
stereotypes and misconceptions about learning disabilities, advocating for a more inclusive and
supportive environment. The film’s impact extends beyond entertainment, serving as an
educational tool and a catalyst for change in attitudes towards disability. Its success has sparked
conversations about the need for reforms in education and greater awareness of learning
disabilities in India .
In conclusion, "Taare Zameen Par" is a compelling and heartfelt portrayal of disability that
resonates deeply with its audience. Through the story of Ishaan Awasthi, the film highlights the
importance of empathy, understanding, and support for individuals with learning disabilities. It
challenges societal norms and educational practices, advocating for a more inclusive and
compassionate approach. The film’s enduring impact lies in its ability to inspire change and
promote a more equitable and supportive environment for all children, regardless of their
abilities. By telling Ishaan’s story, "Taare Zameen Par" not only entertains but also educates and
enlightens, leaving a lasting impression on its viewers.
