Read the passage given below and answer the following questions :
The potential of each electrode is known as electrode potential. Standard electrode
potential is the potential when concentration of each species taking part in electrode
reaction is unity and the reaction is taking place at 298 K. By convention, the standard
electrode potential of hydrogen (SHE) is 0.0 V. The electrode potential value for each
electrode process is a measure of relative tendency of the active species in the process to
remain in the oxidized /reduced form. The negative electrode potential means that the
redox couple is stronger reducing agent than H+/H2 couple. A positive electrode potential
means that the redox couple is a weaker reducing agent than the H+/H2 couple. Metals
which have higher positive value of standard reduction potential form the oxides of greater
thermal stability.
Q.21 (i) Why an electrochemical cell can be set-up only if the redox reaction is
spontaneous.
(ii) What is the standard electrode potential of hydrogen?
(iii) The absolute value of electrode potential cannot be determined experimentally.
(iv) Describe normal hydrogen electrodes and their applications.
(v) Predict the products of electrolyzing of queous sodium chloride solution
Read the passage given below and answer the following questions :
Two electrodes of different potentials dipped in their electrolytic solution and connected
externally by a circuit and internally by a salt bridge is called Electrochemical cell. For
the cell of Zn and Cu -
• Oxidation occurs at the anode (Zn), (it is a negative pole), Electrons move from anode
(Zn) to cathode (Cu).
• Reduction occurs at the cathode (Cu), it is the +ve pole, it receives electrons from anode
(Zn).
• The reaction taking place at each electrode is called half-cell reaction. The sum of these
two half-reactions is the overall cell reaction.
• Electrons flow from –ve pole to +ve pole but current is said to flow in the opposite
direction.
• The two half-cell reactions always occur simultaneously. Only reduction or only
oxidation never takes place.
• Salt Bridge contains neutral strong electrolyte conductor that maintain the electrical
conductivity with least potential drop. Salt may be of KNO3, KCN or NH4 NO3 in the
mixture of agar-agar jelly
