Exercise 1.
A room has dimensions of 6.20 m × 6.00 m × 3.10 m high, as shown in Figure. The room has one solid
wood door (0.90 m× 2.0 m) and one solid window glass (1.50 m × 1.2 m) in the 6-m wall. The walls and the
ceiling are made of concrete. The half of the floor is covered with a carpet on concrete floor. A machine
(sound power levels given in the Table is located in the room, and the directivity factor for the machine is
Q = 2 for all frequencies. There are 10 adults standing in the room.

1.1. Determine the total surface area S0 of the room.

1.2. Determine the average surface absorption coefficient of the room. Absorption coeficients for wood,
concrete, carpet, glass respectively (αw= 0.12, αc= 0.03, αca= 0.45, αg= 0.08. For one people, αpSp=0.44)
1.3. Determine the room constant at 1000 Hz
1.4. Determine the octave band steady-state sound pressure level in the room at a distance of 3.00 m from
the machine.
1.5. Determine the overall sound pressure level due to the source
1.6. Determine the total number (A) of absorption units
1.7. Determine the volume of the room
1.7. Determine the reverberation time for the 1000 Hz octave band for the room. The sonic velocity for the
air in the room (at 218o C) is 344 m/s.

Exercise 3: (8 marks)
The x component of sound induced particle velocity vx(t) (as it propagates in the x direction) associated with
the pressure variations of the Figure. The particle velocity along the direction of propagation of the wave
vx(t) at a point in space (point Q) produced by the same tone is plotted as a function of time for a short
segment around -0.2 < t <1.1 ms in the Figure. In air: speed of sound is 346.1 m/s; characteristic impedance,
409.8 rayl) at 258C (298.2K) and 101.3 kPa.
Find:
3.1. the frequency f of the continuous tone and
the period?
3.2. the radian frequency ω, the wave number and
the wave length,
3.3 the rms amplitude of the sound velocity and
its average amplitude?
3.4 the rms amplitude of the sound pressure and
its average amplitude?
3.5. Describe vx(t) at point Q in terms of a cosine function.
3.6 Describe vx(t) at point Q in terms of a an exponential function. Do same for the acoustic pressure px(t).
3.7 Find the relationship between “the magnitude and angle of the exponential notation”, and “the
magnitude and angle of a real part”?
3.8 Find the sound pressure Level in the Figure relative to PRef =2×10-5 Pa rms?
