Sole Pattern
Tips for sole:
1.Count your stitches after every round. You count the stitches you see around the sole after you make
the slip stitch at the end of the round and the slip stitch is also counted as a stitch.
2. At end of each round when pattern says sl st into beginning ch 1, you sl stitch into the next st
visible and when it says sl st to 1st sc of the round you skip ch 1 ( next st visible ) and then slip st to
the next st, the first sc.
3. Some rounds involve a mix of sc and hdc to make the toe side wider. It would be a good idea to
use the cursor and mark on the pattern here to know where you are. You might get confused with all
the counting.
4. Sole is worked in the round without turning at each round.
5. Working both the soles first will help you get both the booties in the same size.
6. Variations in stitch counts for bigger sizes are given in brackets.
For sizes 0-3 months work sole as follows :
With hook F chain 12. Chain uniformly to maintain gauge.
Round 1: 1 sc into 2nd chain from hook,1 sc in each remaining chain across to last chain, 3 sc in last
chain. Do not turn. Work along opposite side of foundation chain as shown in pic 1 above, sc in each
chain across, join with sl st in beginning ch 1--------------24 st
Round 2: ch 1 , 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 st, 1 hdc in next 5st, 2 hdc in each of next 3 st, 1 hdc in
next 5 st, 1 sc in next 4st, 2sc in next st, 1sc in next , sl st into top of beginning ch 1-------------30 st
Round 3: ch 1, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 10 st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 st, 2
sc in next st, 1 sc in next 10 st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next, sl st to 1st sc------------ 34 st
Round 4: ch 1, 1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 6 st, 1 hdc in next 5 st , 2 hdc in next, 2
hdc again in next, 1 hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st again, 1 hdc in next 5st , 1 sc in
next 6 st, 2 sc in next, 1 sc in next 2 st, sl st to 1st sc. Fasten off---------- 40 st
Make 4 soles, as you will need 2 for each sandal, 2 in each color.
For sizes 3-6 (6-9 , 9-12 ) months work sole as follows
Using F hook chain 13 (14, 16). Chain uniformly to maintain gauge and keep your sole stiff.
Round 1: 1 sc into 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next 6 st( 7 st, 8 st), 1 hdc in next 4 st ( 4 st, 5st) , 3 hdc in

Left Ankle Back for 0-3 ( 3-6 , 6-9 , 9-12) months
Note :
1. The left leg will have the ankle back closing towards the left side and the right one will have it
closing on the right side. The button hole band overlaps the button band.
2. The ankle back is not worked directly on to the soles but worked separately and slip stitched
onto the back side of the sole.
3. Whenever you reach the chain 1 for a button hole work in to the chain space. It is considered a
stitch and counted for the stitch counts at the end of the rows.
4. You turn at end of every row unless otherwise specified.
5. The variations in stitch counts for the bigger sizes are given in brackets in the order 0-3 (3-6, 6-
9, 9-12 ) months. I suggest, you circle the count pertaining to your size before you start. Also
note that the ankle back for the sizes 6-9 and 9-12 months are exactly the same.

Marking the soles for attaching the ankle backs 0-3 (3-6, 6-9 , 9-

shown by arrow and place the marker on both sides
Copyright ©2010 CrochetDreamz. All Rights Reserved
Page 16- Gladiator Sandals
2. Overlap the 2 soles and pull the marker through the 2nd sole too.
Notes:
1. Weave in all the ends on both the the ankle back except the ones at the base of the arch,
they can be pulled under the upper sole and sandwiched between the 2 layers of soles.
2. Overlap the 2 colored soles with wrong sides together and mark 12 ( 13, 15, 15) st on the
ankle side pulling the marker through both the soles . Do for both left and right sandals. To
get the markers symmetrically placed, fold the sole lengthwise and count back half the number
from tip and place each marker as shown in the pictures 1 and 2 above. For example to mark
15, fold the sole, leave one stitch at the tip and count back 7 to place marker. Repeat on the
other side to place the second marker. When you open the fold you will have 15 stitches
marked.

Steps for Attaching the Left and Right Ankle Back ( for all sizes)
1. For both the left and right ankle backs, place a marker on the 4th stitch on the button hole
band, the stitch that is turning up at the base of the arch. See pics 1 and 2 on Page 17. Now you
will have 2 markers on each ankle back which indicates where you will slip stitch them to the
soles.
2. Now, roll the ankle backs to overlap 3 stitches on the button band with the button hole band .
The 4th st on the button band will be free to slip stitch to the sole. Sew it to hold them together
using the yarn tail so that you can comfortably slip stitch it to the soles. See pic 3 for this step.
Now your ankle back is ready to be slip stitched to the soles and you will have 12( 13, 15, 15)
stitches marked on the ankle back corresponding to the same number of stitches marked on the
sole for your size. Note that the 3 stitches behind the button hole band are not counted.
Note: The 3 stitches of the button band hiding behind the buton hole band are left free and not
slip sticthed to the sole.
3. Start slip stitching the soles as shown in Pic 4 above and when you near the marker keep the
ankle back on the sole aligning the marked stitch on the ankle back to the marked st on soles as
shown in pic 5 above. Slip stitch the marked st on the ankle back to marked st on sole as shown
in Pic 6 above and continue slip sticthing the ankle back to the two layers of soles till you reach
the marker on the other side and slip stitch the two marked stitches on ankle and soles together .
Let go of the ankle back now and continue slip stitching the 2 soles together.
4. When you reach the last slip stitch, take the hook out of the loop, insert it up through the first
st, pull the loop under the sole and fasten off as shown in pic 7 above. This will give a
uniform finsih to your slip st border around the sole.
