Wastewater Treatment Assignment

Submission date 01/03/2024 10:00PM Local time

Group assignment (Max. 4 student/group)
1. What is meant by activated sludge? Describe with sketch the treatment of
sewage by activated sludge process. Mention the advantage and disadvantage
of the system
2. If a 30-day BOD of sewage at 20oC is 400mg/l. Find its 5-day BOD at 20oC?
Assume value of 𝐾20 = 0.1/day.
3. Change in concentration of organic matter, L, with time, t, is given by
𝑑𝐿
= −𝐾𝐿
𝑑𝑡
Calculate the organic matter remaining after 3 days if the initial concentration
was 200mg/l, and K = 0.4 per day
4. The following observations were made on a 3% dilution of waste water.
✓ Dissolved oxygen (D. O.) of aerated water used for dilution = 3.0 mg/l
✓ Dissolved oxygen (D. O.) of diluted sample after 5 days incubation = 0.8
mg/l
✓ Dissolved oxygen (D. O.) of original sample = 0.6 mg/l.
Calculate the BOD of 5 days and ultimate BOD of the sample assuming that
the deoxygenation coefficient at test temperature is 0.1.
5. Estimate efficiency of a 30m diameter and 1m deep single stage high-rate
trickling filter for the following data
i. Sewage flow = 4.5ML/day ii. Recirculation ratio = 1.4
iii. BOD of raw sewage = 250mg/l iv. BOD removed in primary
tank = 25%
v. Final effluent of BOD desired = 30mg/l
6. Determine the dimensions of a high-rate trickling filter for the following data:
i. Sewage flow = 3ML/day ii. Recirculation ratio = 1.5
iii. BOD of raw sewage = 250mg/l iv. BOD removed in primary
tank = 25%
By what % the diameter of the filter will have to modified if it is to be designed as
standard rate trickling filter.

Wastewater Treatment Assignment

7. 125 cumecs of sewage of a city is discharged in a perennial river which is fully

saturated with oxygen and flows at a minimum rate of 1600 cumecs with a
minimum velocity of 0.12 m/sec. If the 5-day BOD of the sewage is 300 mg/l,
find out where the critical DO will occur in the river. Assume the coefficient of
purification of the river as 4.0 and the ultimate BOD as 125% of the 5-day BOD
of the mixture of sewage and river water. Take Saturation DO Concentration of
the given river between 8 and 10.
