Introduction
In the realm of engineering, surveying serves as the indispensable groundwork
for any project, spanning its inception, execution, and completion phases. From
pinpointing the most favourable sites for erecting bridges, tunnels, and roads to
crafting detailed blueprints and overseeing the construction evolution, the role
of surveying remains pivotal in ensuring the success and precision of
engineering endeavours.

Objective
Our objective is to undertake comprehensive field surveys aimed at
conceptualizing and materializing a bicycle parking facility at UNITEN capable
of accommodating a minimum of 150 bicycles. This initiative aims to foster a
culture of pedestrianism and cycling within the campus community. The task
entails identifying prime locations and formulating meticulous plans and
construction directives to facilitate the project's realization.

Problem Statement
A rise in the numbers of vehicles at UNITEN has raised concerns. To address
this issue, promoting walking and cycling within the campus is being
encouraged. To facilitate this initiative, additional bicycle parking bays are
urgently required in various areas of UNITEN. Consequently, you have been
tasked with conducting all necessary field surveys to design and construct a
bicycle parking bay capable of accommodating at least 150 bicycles. You are
required to present your work and submit a report after the presentation.

Apparatus
[Link] level (1 unit)
2. Tripod (1 unit)
3. Levelling Staff (2 units)
4. Hammer, nails & spray
5. Measuring Tape (1 units)

Procedure
• The automatic level is set up on the tripod at the designated survey area.
• The levelling staff is positioned at different points across the area to be
surveyed.
• Measurements are taken using the automatic level to determine the elevation
levels of the survey site.
• The positions for the bicycle parking bay are identified based on the survey
findings.
• Using the measuring tape, the dimensions and boundaries of the parking bay
are marked out on the ground.
• Hammer, nails, and spray are utilized to mark the boundaries permanently for
further reference.
• Additional surveys are conducted as needed to ensure accuracy and
compliance with design specifications.
• Detailed plans and construction guidelines are formulated based on the survey
data collected.
• The procedures and findings are documented thoroughly for presentation and
subsequent report submission as per the assigned task.

Analysis
Cut and fill volume analysis is a crucial component in construction and
earthwork projects, providing insights into the excavation and filling
requirements for site preparation. Here, we will discuss the significance of cut
and fill volume analysis, the methods used for its calculation, and its
implications in project planning and cost estimation.
1. Importance of Cut and Fill Volume Analysis:

Cut and fill volume analysis helps determine the amount of material that
needs to be removed (cut) or added (fill) to achieve the desired site
topography. It allows project managers and engineers to accurately
estimate the quantity of earthwork involved, aiding in budgeting, resource
allocation, and project scheduling. By understanding the cut and fill
requirements, potential issues, such as excessive soil removal or
inadequate fill material, can be identified and addressed early in the
project.

2. In this experiment we use Grid Method:

the site is divided into a grid of equally spaced cells. The elevation of
each cell is surveyed, and the cut or fill volume for each cell is calculated
by comparing the existing elevation with the desired final elevation. The
volumes of all the cells are then combined to obtain the total cut or fill
volume.

3. Accurate cut and fill volume analysis enables better project planning and
cost estimation. It helps determine the amount of excavation or fill
material required, allowing for proper scheduling of equipment and
resources. Additionally, it aids in estimating the costs associated with
earthwork, including labor, machinery, and material transportation. By
having a clear understanding of the cut and fill volumes, project managers
can optimize resource allocation, minimize waste, and mitigate potential
delays or budget overruns.

cut and fill volume analysis is a critical aspect of construction and

earthwork projects. By accurately calculating the amount of material to
be excavated or filled, project managers can make informed decisions
regarding resource allocation, project scheduling, and cost estimation.
The choice of calculation method and the consideration of site-specific
factors play significant roles in achieving reliable and efficient cut and fill
volume analysis.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the field surveys conducted to design and construct a bicycle
parking bay at UNITEN have provided valuable insights into addressing the
rising concerns associated with vehicular congestion on campus. By promoting
walking and cycling through the implementation of additional bicycle parking
facilities, the initiative aims to enhance campus mobility and sustainability. The
thorough analysis of survey data has enabled the identification of optimal
locations for the parking bay, ensuring efficient utilization of campus space.
Moving forward, the comprehensive plans and construction guidelines derived
from the surveys will serve as essential blueprints for the successful
implementation of the project. Overall, the efforts undertaken underscore the
commitment to fostering a conducive environment for alternative modes of
transportation, thereby contributing to the promotion of a healthier and more
environmentally conscious campus community.
