QUESTION 1

a) Differentiate between qualitative and quantitative analysis by giving an appropriate


example of both type chemical analyses.
(2 marks)

b) Calculate how many grams of K2Cr207 is needed to prepare 100 mL solution containing
25 ppm K+.
(3 marks)

QUESTION 2

A precipitate of hydrated chloride was titrated with silver nitrate solution. The final
concentration was tabulated as follow.

a) By using Q-test, determine whether the outlier in the data should be rejected or retained
at a 90% confidence level.

b) Q-test is a systematic way to examine gross error. Determine how gross error can be
occurred by giving two (2) examples of error in this analysis.

c) Based on your answer on question 2(a), express the confidence level of the data set that
can be reported at 95% confidence level.

a) Sample storage is vital important to protect samples from contamination. State two (2)
examples of precaution should be taken to preserve the sample.

b) Wet digestion usually uses combination of acids to achieve a complete dissolution. List
all the steps are taken for the wet digestion process.

Describe the preparation of 250 mL of 0.5 M potassium hydrogen phthalate, C8H5KO4


solution from a primary standard solid. Explain a reason why potassium hydrogen phthalate
was considered as primary standard solution.

a) Identify the pH of the solution and suitable indicator for the titration of ethanoic acid with
sodium hydroxide.

b) Briefly explain the conceptual of the back-titration.

c) An antacid tablet sample weighing 0.7023 g and containing magnesium hydroxide,


Mg(OH)2 plus starch and sweetener was added to 50.00 mL 0.300 M HCI in a flask. After
the reaction was completed, the excess HCI in the flask required 28.06 mL of 0.120 M
NaOH for titration to the equivalent point. Calculate the percentage (w/w) of Mg(OH)2 in
the tablet.

a) State four (4) properties of a good precipitate in gravimetric analysis.

b) A 0.30 g aluminium ore sample was dissolved in NH4OH solution to give aluminium
hydroxide, AI(OH)3 precipitate. The precipitate was then dried and weighted. The
resulting product of precipitate is alumina, Al203 weighted to be 0.2267 g. Determine the
weight percent Al in the sample.

a) Give two (2) applications of paper chromatography.

b) Distinguish between adsorption chromatography and partition chromatography.

c) Below are the Rf values of amino acids in a solvent A;

Sketch the TLC result of a mixture containing glycine, alanine and serine. The base line
to solvent front length equal to 5.2 cm. Draw the chromatogram and label the spots of
