#1 FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLE OF
COUNTING:
1. Espie’s Ice Cream Parlor offers 12
flavors of ice-cream which can be
served on a waffle, sugar or plain cone.
How many different single scoop ice-
cream cones is it possible to buy at the
parlor?
SOLUTION:
There are two choices: type of cone and
flavor of ice-cream. At the first stage, we
choose a type of cone and at the
second stage we choose a flavor. If
there are 3 types of cones and 12
flavors of ice cream, then:
stage1 stage 2
× =36 ways of choosing a
3 12
single scoop ice-cream cone at the
parlor.
2. In 2014, automobile license plates
display 3 letters followed by 4 digits.
How many such plates are possible if
repetition of letters:
a. is allowed
b. is not allowed
SOLUTION:
a) there are seven choices, one for
each letter or digit on the license
plate
At the first stage, we choose a letter
(26 possible choices); at the second
stage, another letter (again 26
choices); at the third stage, another
letter (26 choices); at the fourth
stage, a digit (10 possible choices);
at the fifth stage, a digit) again from
10 choices); and at sixth stage,
another digit (10 choices). The
seventh stage, another digit (10
choices). Then,
⏟
26 ∙ 26 ∙26 ⏟
∙ 10
letters
∙ 10∙ 10 ∙10 =175 , 760 ,000
digits
b) If repetition of letters is not allowed,
then we can arrange the choices as
follows:
At the first stage, we have 26 letters
to choose from but once the first
letter is chosen, there are only 25
letters to choose from at the second
stage. Once the first two letters are
chosen, 24 letters are left to choose
for the third stage. The digits are
chosen as before. Thus, the number
of possible license plates in this
case is:
⏟
26 ⏟
∙ 25 ∙24 ∙ 10
letters
∙ 10∙ 10 ∙10 =175 , 760 , 000
digits
3. In how many ways can the 1 st, 2nd, 3rd
prized be awarded in a math contest
with 15 contestants?
15 ∙14 ∙13=2370
E. Developing mastery Practice Exercise: (Board work) Students will volunteer to
(leads to formative present their solution on
assessment) the board.
1. A bus has 6 vacant seats in the last
row. If 2 additional passengers enter Expected answers:
1. 6 ∙ 5=30 ways
the bus, in how many ways can they
be seated?
2. Finding practical Analyze and solve the given problem: Expected answer:
applications of
concepts and skills in 1. A clown has 4 different colors of 1. 4 ∙3=12 ways
daily living ballons. If 2 children will receive one
ballon each from the clown, in how
many ways can this be done?
2. Making Let’s Recap! (Answers may vary)
generalizations and
abstractions about How do you determine the number of By using the fundamental
the lesson arrangements in a given situation? principle of counting that
helps us determine the
total number of
arrangements or
outcomes by considering
the possible choices in
each stage and multiplying
it.
3. Evaluating learning SEATWORK: Student’s expected

a. If repetition of letters is allowed. 5 ∙5 ∙ 5 ∙5¿ 625
b. If repetition of letters is not
