Causes of Water Scarcity

Population Growth: Population growth is a major
cause of water scarcity which we can’t actually
control. As the population of the world grows, the
demand of water increases such as farming,
buisnesses, and domestic use. This heightened
demand of water puts pressure on the already
small amount of freshwater resources, leading to
water scarcity all over the world (source:
https://akvosphere.com/).

Climate Change: Climate change is already

affecting water access for people worldwide
through natural disasters like hurricane, floods,
and unexpected storms. This drastically increases
the risk of droughts, wildfires, and water
contamination, thus causing water scarcity, this
With this high demand, we need to be able to control and manage it, or else there
issue is mainly in low and middle income countries might be a time when all the freshwater in the world will run out (source:

Effects of Water Scarcity

Economic Growth Impact: Economic
development is a major affect of water
scarcity,A recent World Bank study revealed
that certain areas may face a reduction of up
to 6% in their Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
due to water scarcity worsened by climate
change. This could lead to increased migration
and potential conflicts in those regions
(source: https://www.worldbank.org/).

Health: Health is a major effect of water

scarcity to individual as people get extremely
thirsty and have to drink contaminated/dirty
water, thus causing waterborne diseases or can
even lead to death. On water.org, it stated that
more than 1 million people die like this each
year (source: https://water.org/ ).

Case Study: Cape Town, South Africa

Water scarcity had been negatively affecting
Africa for a long time and now people of Cape
Town, South America are dreading for what’s
been called “day 0”. That’s the day the city’s
water supply could be shut down and people
need to do something about it. Cape Town has
been in serious drought and the people are not
caring at all and still have been using too much
water. At this pace, South Africa could
completely run out of water..

we need to help the people living in Cape Town or else they will
have no water left (source: https://abcnews.go.com/)

There are many factors for the lack of water in

Cape Town, but the main cause is the the
reservoirs which collects water around Cape Town
have gone unfilled for more than three years and
are going to dry off. One more natural cause is
that droughts have been occurring in Cape Town a
lot. People in Cape Town don’t seem to care and
aren’t showing any improvement in water usage.

Water reservoirs drying up in Cape Town, right now 12.5% are full, if it is 10% full or less,
the water is unusable (source: https://www.france24.com/

We can do a lot of things to solve this issue. The

government can implement a daily water use limit
so that each person can use only a certain amount
of water each day, if they overuse it, they must pay
fines. We can also contribute by raising awareness
and telling the people living there how we must
need to start changing or else there won’t be any
water for anyone. The people living there can also
implement sustainable water practices like doing
short showers or turning of the tap when not
needed. These small steps may seem like nothing,
but if the whole city does this, it will make a
drastic impact

Solutions of Water Scarcity

Investing in water infrastructure: Investing in
water infrastructure is a great solution to water
scarcity as in some places, we do not have the
resources and technology to be able for the people
living there to get clean, uncontaminated water.
Its also a good decision to invest in water
infrastructure because it creates lots of jobs and
will eliminate various waterborne diseases and
thousands of deaths. On ngrc.org, it states that
“$188.4 billion spent on water infrastructure
investments over a 5-year period would yield $265

billion in economic activity and create 1.9 million

jobs”

Awareness & Education: Awareness is a very

important way individuals can do to stop water
scarcity. If we can educate everyone around us
about this global crisis, they will also start to do
sustainable water practices like turning of the tap
when brushing etc., which if everyone does, can
make a huge difference in the world. On
solarimpulse.com, it states that “Education is
critical to solve the water crisis. In fact, in order
to cope with future water scarcity, it is necessary
to radically reform all forms of consumption, from
individual use to the supply chains of large
companies.”
small steps like this can make a huge difference.

Seawater Desalination: Seawater Desalination is the

process of desalting sea water, sea water itself is filled
with lots of salt and other minerals, but if we filter it
out to remove the salt the other minerals, it can be
used as freshwater in undeveloped countries or cities
which do not have any clean water but live close to
the coast. This process isn’t costly at all, only 0.5€ for
one cubic meter of water! On the smartmagazine.com,
it states that “[It’s such a good solution as you can
get] 40-45 liters of fresh water for every 100 liters of
seawater collected.”. (Source:
