and
Professional Ethics
KVE-401
Value
• Something that is important, worthy or useful
for human beings,
• That gives feeling of
– Happiness
– Prosperity (Successful with money)
Education
• Education is the process of teaching, learning
skills and knowledge.
• Education is the means to impart knowledge
and skills in human being.
Value Education
• Deals with the learning of-
– What is universally valuable to all of us.
– What is conductive to our individual and collective
happiness and prosperity in a sustainable way.
Value Education
• We can say that –
“value education impart the knowledge and skills in
human beings about what is universally valuable
and how to live in state of continuous happiness and
prosperity”
Need for Value Education
• All human beings continuously aspire for a happy
life, a fulfilling and successful life, and the
purpose of education is to provide adequate
competence to actualize this aspiration.
• For this first of all it is essential to understand –
what is really VALUABLE for human being, and,
what is really conductive to a happy and fulfilling
life – this is the VALUE DOMAIN
Need for Value Education contd..
• Then it is essential to know – how to actualize it?
How to make it happen – this is domain of SKILLS.
• The subject which enables us to understand
‘what is valuable’ for human happiness is called
VALUE EDUCATION.
• Thus value education enables us to understand
our needs and visualize our goals correctly and
also indicate the direction of their fulfillment.
Need for Value Education contd..
• The ‘value’ of any unit in this existence is its
participation in the larger order of which it is a
part e.g. value of a pen is that it can write.
Here writing is the participation of the pen in
the bigger order in which pen, paper, human
being, all are present
Need for Value Education contd..
• Let us look at different aspect to appreciate the
need for VALUE EDUCATION
– Correct identification of our aspiration
– Understanding universal human values to fulfill our
aspiration in continuity
– Complementarity of values and skills
– Evaluation of our beliefs
– Technology and human values.
Basic Guidelines for Value Education
• Universal- applicable to all human beings
• Rational – not based on blind belief
• Secular – not based on any cast or creed or religion
• All Encompassing – aimed at transforming our
consciousness and living. It cover all dimensions of our
living – thought, behavior, work, and understanding as well
as all levels – individual, family, society and nature
• Natural and Verifiable
• Leading to Harmony
Content of Value Education
All mentioned previous. It must be included
• All dimensions – thought, behavior, work, &
realization
• All levels – individual, family, society, nature &
existence of human lining
That is, it have a clear understanding of each of
these and their interrelationships i.e. harmony
underlying all of them.
The Process of Value Education
The process of Value Education has to be that of ‘Self Exploration’ &
‘Self Investigation’ and not of giving sermons or telling do’s and don’ts.
What ever is found as truth or reality may be stated as proposal and
has to be verified at own right.
• It is process of dialogue between ‘What you are’ and ‘What you
really want to be’.
• It is a process of knowing oneself and through that knowing entire
existence.
• It is process of recognizing one’s relation with every unit in
existence and fulfilling it.
This process of self-Investigation & self-exploration helps you be in
harmony within yourself and in harmony with everything around.
Human Values vs Moral Values
• Moral values regard matters of right and wrong whereas
Human values help a person to distinguish between right and
wrong.
• Moral values are constant and unchanging whereas Human
values change from person to person and from time to time.
• Moral values are for self development and self discipline
whereas Human values is about how we treat others in
society.
• Moral values can be taught whereas Human values are inherit
values and are intact in all of us.
Core Human Values
LOVE
RIGHT PEACE
CONDUCT
NON-
TRUTH
VIOLENCE
Core Human Values
• Love: Unconditional and unselfish
• Peace: Control and mind
• Truth: Indispensable ethical discipline
• Non- Violence: respect for life and recognition of
rights of others.
• Right Conduct: Truth in action is right conduct
“Thinking with Love is Truth, feeling with Love is
Peace, acting with Love is right conduct,
understanding with love is non- violence”
Self Exploration
• It is a process of dialogue between “what you are” and “what you really
want to be”
• It is a process of self evolution through self investigation
• It is a process of knowing oneself and through that, knowing the entire
existence
• It is a process of recognizing one’s relationship with every unit in existence
and fulfilling it
• It is a process of knowing human conduct, human character and living
accordingly
• It is a process of being in harmony in oneself and in harmony with entire
existence
• It is a process of identifying our innateness and moving towards self
organization and self expression
Self Exploration
This process of self exploration helps us to identify our
swatva and through that acquiring swatantrata and
swarajya.
• Swatva: Innateness of self – the natural acceptance of
harmony
• Swatantrata: Being self- organized – being in harmony
with oneself
• Swarajya: Self-expression, self- extension – living in
harmony with others
Swatva ------------ Swatantrata -------------- Swarajya
Content of Self-exploration
the content of Self-exploration can be visualized in terms of
finding answers to the following fundamental questions of all
human beings:
• Desire: What is my basic aspiration?
• Program: What is the process to fulfil this basic aspiration?
Process of Self Exploration
• It is a proposal
– Don’t assume it to be true
• Verify it at your own right
• Don’t just accept or reject it
– on basis of scriptures
– on the basis of reading from instrument
– on the basis of others
• Firstly, verify the proposal on the basis of your natural
acceptance
• Secondly, live according to the proposal to validate it
experientially.
Process of Self Exploration
Verify Proposal
on the basis Experiential Validation
of your Live according to it

Natural Acceptance
Natural acceptance is a faculty, present in all of us. It is intact
and invariant only we have to start paying attention to it.
• Natural acceptance does not change with time
• It does not depend on the place
• It does not depend on our beliefs or past conditionings
• This natural acceptance is ‘constantly there’, something
we can refer to
• Natural acceptance is the same for all of us: it is part and
parcel of every human being, it is part of human-ness
The Basic Human Aspirations
We desire for many things in this world, say materialistic needs,
respect, recognition, love, trust etc., but in the form of all these we
aspire for true and continuous happiness and prosperity.
Happiness: “The state/situation in which I live, it there is
harmony/synergy in it, then I like to be in that state or situation.
• “To be in a state of liking is happiness”.
• “To be in a state of harmony is happiness”.
Unhappiness: “The state/situation in which I live, it there is
conflict/contradiction in it, then I do not like to be in that state or
situation.
• “To be in a state of disliking is unhappiness”.
• “To be in a state of disharmony or contradiction is unhappiness”
Prosperity
Prosperity is the feeling of having or producing
more than the required physical facilities.
two things are essential to ensure prosperity:
(1) Correct assessment of need for physical
facilities
(2) The competence of making available more than
required physical facilities
Present Vision for Happiness and Prosperity
(Prevalent Notion)
We are trying to achieve happiness and prosperity by maximizing accumulation and
consumption of physical facilities. It is becoming anti-ecological and anti-people, and
threatening the human survival itself.
Some of the consequences of such trend are summarized below:
At the level of individual: rising problems of depression, psychological disorders,
suicides, stress, insecurity, etc.
At the level of family: breaking of joint families, mistrust, and conflict between
older and younger generations, insecurity in relationships, divorce, dowry tortures,
etc.
At the level of society: growing incidence of terrorism and naxalism, rising
communalism, spreading casteism, racial and ethnic struggle, wars between
nations, etc.
At the level of nature: global warming, water, air, soil, noise etc. pollution,
resource depletion of minerals and mineral oils, etc.

SVDD, SSDD and SSSS
To achieve our basic aspirations we need to work for right understanding as the base on which we can
work for relationship and then physical facilities. Today we are not working according to this that why we
can see that there are two kind of people in the world:
• 1. SVDD: Sadhan Viheen Dukhi Daridra – Materially Deficient, Unhappy and Deprived .Those that do
not have physical facilities/ wealth and feel unhappy and deprived.
• 2. SSDD: Sadhan Sampann Dukhi Daridra – Materially Affluent, Unhappy and Deprived Those that
have physical facilities/ wealth but still feel unhappy and deprived.
But these are states we don’t want to be in. We want to move from these to third category i.e.
• 3. SSSS: Sadhan Sampann Sukhi Samriddha – Materially Adequate, Happy and Prosperous Having
physical facilities and feeling happy and prosperous i.e..
Presently, as we look around, we find most of the people in the above two categories called SVD and
SSDD, while the natural acceptance of all human beings is to be in the category of SSSS
