Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of teaching technical

drawing techniques to secondary students using CAD and manual drafting.

Introduction

The study's problem was to compare CAD and manual methods on second level

Mechanical Drawing students utilizing the sectional view and supplementary view

techniques of Technical Drawing. The researcher presented the fundamentals of the two

technical drawing styles, sectional view and secondary view drawings, as the teacher.

Throughout the study, one group was assigned to prepare designs utilizing the computer

assisted drafting approach, while the other group employed manual equipment and

procedures. As the sketching methodology moved from sectional views to secondary

views, the groups switched methods.

An ANOVA (ANOVA is a statistical procedure that divides observed variance data

into distinct components for use in additional test) was used to calculate data on drawing

tests, written tests, and total time to complete drawings and written tests for each section's

approaches. Based on the findings of this study, it is possible to infer that both manual

and CAD methods of teaching sectional and auxiliary view drawings are suitable.

Drawing is one of the oldest ways of communication, before vocal communication. It

is a language used to express concepts using lines and symbols, and it has shown to be a

beneficial tool for grasping what spoken communication cannot.

Dr. Ramon De Santos National High School
San Antonio, Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija

"Drawings have evolved along two distinct lines: artistic and technical. The artistic

line includes artists who use drawings to express aesthetic, philosophical, or other

abstract ideas, while the technical line includes people who use drawings to represent the

design of products, objects to be produced or constructed." This study will focus on

technical drawing.

The use of technical drawing was first documented in writing in 30 B.C. When the

Roman architect Vitruvius created a treatise on architecture, he stated, "The architect

must be skillful with the pencil and have a knowledge of drawing so that he can readily

make the drawings required to show the appearance of the work he proposes to

construct."

A universal graphics: language is used to create these illustrations. This language is

usually known as drafting. There are some in the drafting language. There are numerous

subcategories, including (but not limited to) the following. Mechanical drawing,

engineering drawing, technical drawing, engineering graphics, descriptive geometry, and

computer graphics are all examples of technical drawing. Many of these concepts may be

used interchangeably with the broader term of drafting.

Although basic drafting principles must be taught for both manual and computer-aided

drafting, a discussion is currently taking place within the industry. Drafting community

on whether to focus entirely on teaching the new computer-aided drafting skills or

whether a program that incorporates both methods would be preferable.

As CAD technology has become an essential part of the design process in industry and

education, a debate has arisen among concerned trainers concerning whether students can

learn and visualize differently with CAD than with traditional methods. Restraints

believes that students can learn the principles and concepts of drafting equally well by

using a CAD system as well as traditional drafting tools.

The Kashef Study

In 2003, Kashef looked on the efficiency of computer-aided drafting approaches

over traditional drafting techniques for teaching pictorial and multiview designs. The

study's subjects were 37 full-time and part-time male and female undergraduate students

who volunteered to be assigned to either the computer-aided drafting or traditional

drafting section of an industrial technology course at Montclair State College in New

Jersey.

The introductory technical drawing course had no prerequisites and concentrated on

multi view and pictorial view drawings. This class met three times. Two of three intact

classes were randomly assigned to either the CAD group or the traditional drawing

section of the study, one with seventeen students assigned to computer aided drafting and

the other with twenty students assigned to traditional drafting. Both classes were taught

by the same instructor. Prior to the experiment, each class was given six weeks to master

San Antonio, Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija

their individual tools without being exposed to the concept of pictorial and multi-view

drawings.

Comparison between the Kashef study and the present study

The Kashef study's subjects were college students enrolled in an introductory

technical drawing course. The subjects of the current study were secondary school pupils.

The Kashef study used two separate classes, whereas the current study included one class

and divided it into two groups.

Students in both studies received the same education regardless of the technology

(computer or drawing instruments) utilized because the same instructor and textbook

were used for both groups.

The Becker Study

In 2001, Becker conducted research on the content and tactics for Computer-aided

drafting is being taught. The study's major goal was to establish if selected drafting topic

should be taught at the secondary level using traditional methods, computer-aided

methods, or both.

Comparison between the Becker study and the present study

The Becker study used a survey of CAD teaching specialists, with an emphasis on

secondary curriculum practices and material. The current study sought to comprehend

disparities in two components of pedagogy for a secondary mechanical drawing

curriculum.
Dr. Ramon De Santos National High School
San Antonio, Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija

Although the study had no direct influence on the current investigation, it did

explore some extremely significant concepts for teaching technical drawing that were

discussed in the Becker study and applied in the current study. Traditional lectures,

demonstrations, debates, and problems/practices are all useful means of delivering

material to students when teaching CAD.

CAD training should emphasize concepts and know-how over quality and motor

skills. Sketching, orthographic projection, pictorial projection, and dimensioning should

all be taught as fundamentals. In current drawing programs, CAD and conventional

drafting should be complementary.

Both the Becker study and the current studies reveal that CAD is required in a

unified curriculum, technology, software, and other resources are also required services

in secondary schools.

For more than a half-century, computer-aided design (CAD) software has been alive

and available to designers (Architects) in a practical helpful form (Botchway, Abanyie, &

Afram, 2015). CAD evolved from an artistic simulation application available only on

mainframe computers and utilized solely by specialists working on special projects to

being available to anybody with a Personal Computer (PC). In current era of young

people who have practically grown up using computers and adapting to emerging digital

technologies without finding it a complexity (digital), CAD plays a very important part in

the profession and education of architecture.

natives). In general, CAD software is used not only in architecture but also in other fields

also urged engineers and construction workers to produce technical designs for diverse

projects functions. According to Bernstein (2020), "CAD enables the development,

Dr. Ramon De Santos National High School
San Antonio, Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija

modification, and maintenance of products."Process optimization in design." Such

hypotheses can give designers with fresh approaches to hunting. More solutions can be

found in schematic design procedures. Architectural design, like every other type of

design, entails design. Manal and Abowardah (2016) characterizes design as a process

comprised of three major stages: knowledge, development of tools, and implementation.

1 is the equivalent of "Codex Rules" and "Invention". CAD, unlike other technologies,

allows for any design process. A product could be depicted graphically with complete

details and precision utilizing lines Layers, three-dimensional (3D) shapes, and objects

(Thepro 3D) (straight, curved, or polygonal).

Architecture is linked to manual drafting and computer-aided drawing. This pair

should do well in order to have a good performance in class. There are pupils that are

skilled in manual drafting. There are also pupils that excel at Computer Aided Design and

those who excel at manual drafting and computer-aided drawing. Furthermore, it takes a

number of practices to develop the skills and techniques that may be employed in manual

drafting, as well as familiarity with the commands and shortcut keys in computer-aided

drawing and competency in project creation.

In contrast, some students are having difficulty obtaining those skills because they

have not been fully instructed on how to be conversant with manual drafting and

computer-aided drawing. A successful AutoCAD project involves credibility, creativity,

accuracy, tenacity, and patience. Being excited about planning and carrying out a CAD

project is essential; being interested and eager is the key to producing a good AutoCAD

project. AutoCAD does not have an exact strategy for how things will seem; it all

depends on how and what technique you apply. It helps to develop strategic abilities.
Dr. Ramon De Santos National High School
San Antonio, Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija

The practice of drawing by hand is known as manual drafting. Traditionally, manual

drawing processes allowed for the planning and sharing of design concepts and

construction information. To generate precise drawings of the space for the design

project, manual drafting instruments include specialized pencils, rulers, templates, and

scales. The benefits of manual drafting include the lower cost of equipment compared to

CAD hardware and software, the clarity that can be achieved by seeing all shapes, sizes,

and angles on one sheet, the ability to add creative style and expression to drawings, and

a degree of depth and weight that can be easier to convey with 'analogue' rather than

'digital' drawing techniques.

It is critical to examine one's own performance in order to determine where to improve.

One must be aware of their own strengths and flaws. It is necessary to concentrate on the

area in which one lacks understanding. As an example, in the Technical Drafting topic,

this affects a significant portion of the Technical Drafting student's grades.

Technical Drafting is intended to train students in one or more engineering drawing

disciplines. Students begin with fundamental drafting procedures and techniques,

followed by a general examination of the field. 2015 (St. Georges). You build plans to

bring projects to life in a technical drafting career. Technical drafters use computer-aided

design (CAD) to become an essential member of any design team. In industry and

engineering, technical sketching is critical for communicating ideas. Drafters utilize

common symbols, viewpoints, units of measurement, notation systems, visual styles, and

page layout to make the drawings easy to grasp.

This subject introduces the student to the information basis and technical abilities

drafting techniques, freehand technical sketching, orthographic projection, dimensioning,

basic computer abilities, and drawing techniques are all areas of study. Personal and

professional ethics will be emphasized, and students will be exposed to a variety of

employment options. (WVEIS 2012)

Raining in technical drafting can assist prepare persons for a variety of related

employment prospects, such as Architectural and Civil Drafters, Civil Engineers

Technicians, Landscape Architects, Mechanical Engineers, Surveying and Mapping

Technicians, and Surveying and Mapping Technicians. As a result, drafting tries to obtain

knowledge now in order to effectively apply knowledge and skills in the future.

Foreign Studies

The importance of addressing the CAD preference in working drawings coursework

stems from the fact that this course is an essential component of architecture education,

and many students in this discipline struggle to understand and draw working drawings

when only the CAD method is used in coursework preparations. However, because hand

writing needs more effort and time, it is impossible for these kids to rely only on it.

Except for the working drawings coursework, the majority of prior studies contributed to

the study of CAD's impacts on architectural design practice and education. This paper's

scientific contribution is that it assists in selecting the most convenient drawing method

in working drawings coursework, which improves the learning quality of architecture

students. The findings of this study are useful for architecture program organizers and

educators. This research will aid educators and students by reshaping the working

drawings course based on the desired drawing approach.

Due of the widespread usage of personal computers (PCs) and commercially scaled

CAD in the mid-1970s and mid-1980s, the use of CAD emerged in the mid-1970s and

mid-1980s. Furthermore, until the early 1990s, CAD expertise was not required for

graduates to obtain jobs. Architects relied on traditional pen and paper drafting methods

prior to its introduction and application. This drawing method was thought to be time-

consuming.

Computer-aided design (CAD) was defined as "the process of creating virtual three-

dimensional models and two-dimensional drawings of products using computers and

specialist software." Another study defined CAD as computer software used by computer

systems to develop, update, or optimize a design, as well as to enable precise and

accurate drawings. This precision refers to the software's ability to record lines as vectors

based on mathematical computations.

AutoCAD, Revit Architecture by Autodesk, DataCAD by DATACAD LLC, Free

CAD by Juergen Riegel, Chief Architect Software, ArchiCAD by Graphisoft, and

Augmented Reality are examples of CAD software. The productivity, speed, flexibility,

dispersion among architects and engineers, license availability, license price, and stage of

the design process all influence which software applications are chosen.

The early concept stages do not necessitate accuracy or usefulness, but they do

necessitate software that does not limit designer creativity and promotes good design.

Later on, depending on the size and budget of the project, the architect may select

primary CAD software for minor projects or building information modeling (BIM)

software for large and detailed projects.

Dr. Ramon De Santos National High School
San Antonio, Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija

In the early stages of the design process, it is common in interior design to utilize

various relatively unstructured types of pictorial representation, such as sketches, to

investigate the requirements and conditions of the problem space and the solution spaces

(Cross, 2000). Other more structured forms, such as plans or sections, become a part of

the process as the design evolves (Purcell & Gero, 2008). This stage of the process is

commonly referred to as technical drawing or drafting. Interior design and related

professions use drafting as a common language. Understanding and completing plans,

sections, and elevations is commonly recognized as the essential competency in these

disciplines.

Drafting enables for interior design and furniture placement/arrangement

equipment/features for an interior designer. Drafting education is required for students in

design disciplines to become more organized and compliant with the criteria of the

educational system. However, drawing knowledge is required. It is critical, both for

understanding the difficulties and for the implementation phase. Drawing has been

recognized in higher education since the early 1900s. as a useful tool, but also as a

cognitive development tool and a "powerful""calculator engine" (McLaren, 2008).

Hand drawing skills were the most basic. Until the 1960s, drawing abilities were

required for design disciplines. The mid-1960s saw the computer-aided drafting (CAD)

approach was established as a tool for producing drawings sketches without the use of

typical drafting instruments. Technological progress have encouraged a steady shift away

from reliance on traditional drafting tools.

A drawing is a pictorial representation of something, freehand drawing of things and

buildings methods that are mechanical or computerized. Drawings can be abstract, like
Dr. Ramon De Santos National High School
San Antonio, Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija

the multi-view drawings shown in, or more concrete, like the highly advanced computer

model shown in. technological drawing, on the other hand, is used to portray complicated

technological ideas with enough precision for the product to be mass-produced and the

pieces to be easily interchanged. According to Bertoline and Wiebe (2013) and

Kabouridis (2010), technical drawings have been used to express concepts since ancient

times. Technical design, drafting, and drawing are fundamental components of all

technology engineering and design programs' curricula.

A study was done to determine the efficiency of traditional ways of teaching multiview

and pictorial drawing against computer-aided drafting (CAD). The study employed a

quasi-experimental approach, with 37 full- and part-time undergraduate students enrolled

in industrial technology or technical education courses serving as subjects. The students

were divided into two groups for the same drafting course, and both groups were

pretested. The control group was taught the traditional drafting method, while the

experimental group used AutoCAD. There was no significant difference in either group's

ability to make multiview and pictorial drawings after 7 weeks of the courses, according

to performance tests administered after students completed the courses. The study

recommended that CAD be used since it is equally successful as traditional teaching

methods and is the way of the future.

Synthesis

A random sample of Triton's mechanical drawing students was used in this

investigation. Runnemede Regional High School in New Jersey was chosen. 17 students

in the second period students were split into two groups. The pupils were in their second
Dr. Ramon De Santos National High School
San Antonio, Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija

year of mechanical drawing. Students, including sophomores, juniors, and seniors, who

have all achieved achievement finished the level one course that covered the

fundamentals of manual drafting tools and techniques. A designer can simply scale drafts

and drawings of designs using computer assisted design. He or she can also employ pre-

existing templates and established formats to help with the actual design. A designer

would have to perform things one at a time via manual drafting. Scaling can also be time-

consuming. Layers of the design can be done separately or simultaneously with CAD. It

all depends on what the design requires. Designs are also more approachable.

A study comparing CAD and manual drafting discovered that CAD took longer to

finish than manual drafting. However, adopting CAD software made it easy to update and

edit designs. Furthermore, CAD allowed for faster revision times.

The report also recommended that CAD software and equipment be improved for

future usage. Thus, we may anticipate that as CAD improves and more people learn and

master it, the use of CAD design will take less time than manual drafting in the early

stages.

With the help of CAD, designs may be easily updated. There should always be room

for error when it comes to product design. Never, ever is the first draft the final draft. As

a result, designers should use a method that is more tolerant of modifications and errors.

When done often, manual re-drawing can become tiresome and repetitive.

Furthermore, it is less efficient and takes more time. CAD reduces the need to redo things

from the ground up. Designers may quickly load up a specific stage of the draft or shift

things around without losing their previously generated design.
