Case Study Based Questions
60. The measuring process is essentially a process of comparison. Even with the best efforts and taking ~
the necessary precautions the measured quantity is somewhat different from its actual value or true value.
This inevitable difference between the true and the measured value of a quantity can be termed as error
of a measurement. The magnitude of difference between the true value and measured value is termed as
absolute error in a physical quantity, while the arithmetic mean of the magnitude of all absolute error~
termed as mean absolute error. The ratio of mean absolute error to the mean value of all the readings of a
physical quantity while measuring the quantity is termed as relative error. The accuracy of a measurement
is a measure how close the measured value is to the true value of a quantity.
(i) The mean time period of a second's pendulum is 2.00 s, and mean absolute error in the measuremen!
of time period is 0.05 s. To express maximum estimate of error, the time period should be expressed
as
(1) (2.00 ± 0.01) s (2) (2.00 ± 0.025) s (3) (2.00 ± 0.05) s (4) (2.00±0.10)s
(ii) The expected value of voltage across a resistor is 80 V. However, the measurement gives a value of
79 V. Then the percentage error in measurement of resistor is
(1) 1.25% (2) 12.5% (3) 0.125% (4) 1.025%
(iii) The distance covered by a body in time (6.0 ± 0.6) sis (36.0 ± 0.4) m. The relative error in the determination
of speed is
(1) 0.13 (2) 0.11 (3) 0.32 (4) 0.48
(iv) A student performs an experiment in lab in order to measure a physical quantity, and takes ~00
observations. He repeats the same experiment and takes 500 observations. By doing so, the possible
error
( 1) Remains same (2) Is doubled (3) Is halved (4) Reduced to one-fiftll
(v) In the measuring instrument, the degree of conformity and closeness to the true value is known as
(1) Precision (2) Accuracy (3) Measuring scale (4) Sensitivity

(ii) The period of oscillation of a simple pendulum is given by the relation T 2nt.
= The measureo
values of length L and the period of oscillations for 50 oscillations are (20.0 ± 0 .1) cm and (45 ± 1) 8
respectively. Find the absolute error in determination of g.
31. (i) Explain how errors combine after arithmetic operations of two measured values?
(ii) If the heat dissipated in a resistor depends on its resistance R, current I through it and the time t for
which the current flows , find an expression for heat H dissipated.
