About the book:

Education is a key for a country’s development, but it
becomes a hindrance when it is unequally distributed. This
big problem of disparity in Education system can be solved
through technology. Hence it’s high time we embrace
technology in Education sooner than later.

Teachers will therefore use the book in their laptops to teach

and even give students notes to read online after revision.

THE ARTS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Costing of artworks
In Grade Seven, you learnt career pathways for the Visual Arts on how to make a living through
selling artworks or pursuing careers in the visual arts. In Grade Eight, you are going to learn
how to cost two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) artworks.
Costing of artworks is the process used by an art entrepreneur to calculate the amount of money
used to create an artwork in order to price and sell at competitively. To achieve this, an artist
should understand what customers look where or when they shop and how much they can afford
to spend.
The pictures below show artworks that are on sale.

JUNIOR SECONDARY (GRADE 8)

You are tasked to find out factors considered when costing an artwork. Visit artists within your
locality and discuss the following questions:
1. What factors are considered when pricing an artwork?
2. How does an artist determine the price of an artwork?

What I have learnt

Costing involves estimating the amount of money spent to make an artwork.
Pricing involves setting the amount of money at which an artwork will be
1. Hourly wage is charged for each hour spent creating the artwork. It is is normally calculated
as daily wage. Daily wage is the amount of calculated by multiplying the hourly wage by the
number of hours used to create the artwork in a day.

2. Time taken is the duration used to create the artwork.

3. Cost of the materials is the amount of money spent to purchase materials used for making the
artwork.
4. Overhead costs which are not directly related to production but are electricity bills, security,
advertising, transport costs, among others.
5. Commission is charged by a gallery or person selling the artwork on behalf of the artist.
6. Market price is the amount charged by other artists for similar artworks.
Calculating the Unit Cost of Artworks for Proper Value Placement
Calculating the unit cost is an important part of pricing an artwork. This process ensures that an
artwork is sold at a price which enables an artist to make profit. It also ensures that an artwork is
competitively priced. When calculating the cost of an artwork, the following formula is used:

Cost of an artwork = (reasonable daily wage x number of days used to produce the artwork + the
cost of materials used + overhead costs + profit margin at 30% of cost of material)
Where;
1. Reasonable daily wage is the daily payment made to a worker recommended by labor laws.
2. Number of days is the duration taken to make the artwork.
3. Cost of materials is the total amount of money spent on materials used to make the artwork.
4. Overhead costs are the bills paid by the artist irrespective of whether the artwork has been
sold or not.
5. Profit margin is the money earned by the artist beyond the cost used to produce the artwork
after selling it.
