PRE-APPLIED WATERPROOFING
1.0 GENERAL
1.01 SUMMARY
A. The Work of this Section includes, but is not limited to, pre-applied sheet
membrane waterproofing that forms an integral bond to poured concrete for the
following applications:
1. Vertical Applications: Membrane applied against soil retention system prior
to placement of concrete foundation walls;
2. Horizontal Applications: Membrane applied on prepared subbase prior to
placement of concrete slabs.
B. Related sections include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Section 02200 – Earthwork
2. Section 02350 – Piles and Caissons
3. Section 03100 – Concrete Formwork
4. Section 03300R – Cast-In-Place Concrete
Note: For vertical applications, coordinate with concrete formwork section to require
one-sided wall forming system to minimize punctures to the sheet membrane
waterproofing during formwork installation.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit manufacturer's product data, installation instructions and membrane
samples for approval.
PRE-APPLIED WATERPROOFING
D 1970 Standard Specification for Self-Adhering Polymer Modified
Bituminous Sheet Materials Used as Steep Roofing Underlayment
for Ice Dam Protection.
D 3767 Standard Practice for Rubber – Measurements of Dimensions.
D 5385 Standard Test Method for Hydrostatic Pressure Resistance of
Waterproofing Membranes.
D 96 Standard Test Methods for Water Vapor Transmission of
Materials.
D 154 Standard Test Methods for Water Vapor Retarders Used in Contact
with Earth Under Concrete Slabs, on Walls, or as Ground Cover.
PRE-APPLIED WATERPROOFING
A. Perform work only when existing and forecasted weather conditions are
within the limits established by the manufacturer of the materials used.
Proceed with installation only when the substrate construction and
preparation work is complete and in condition to receive sheet membrane
waterproofing.
B. Working at sandy weather is prohibited.
1.8 WARRANTY
A 10 years guarantee shall be provided by the contractor to the benefit of the Client for
materials and workmanship of waterproofing. This warranty shall clearly include the
following :
1. All materials in the waterproofing systems shall be free from manufacturing defects
and comply with manufacturer's published technical specifications.
2. All workmanship in waterproofing systems shall be free from any defects and comply
with all respect to the manufacturer's technical instructions and control.
3. This warranty becomes operative from the date of issue of the preliminary handing
over certificate of the contract and shall be valid for a period of ten (10) calendar years.
4. Within this warranty the contractor is liable for the cost of repair of defected materials
or installation of a replacement materials or system.
The text of the warranty shall be to the Consultant Engineer approval.
2.0 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
PRE-APPLIED WATERPROOFING
Footnotes:
1. Elongation of membrane is run at a rate of 50mm per minutes.
2. Concrete is cast against the protective coating surface of the membrane and
allowed to cure (7 days minimum). Peel adhesion of membrane to concrete is
measured at a rate of 50mm per minute at room temperature.
3. The test is conducted 15 minutes after the lap is formed as per manufacturer's
instructions and run at a rate of 50mm per minute at -40C.
4. Hydrostatic head tests are performed by casting concrete against the membrane
with a lap. Before the concrete sets a 3mm spacer is inserted perpendicular to
the membrane to create a gap. The cured block is placed in chamber where
water is introduced to the membrane surface up to a head of 70m of water
which is the limit of the apparatus.
PRE-APPLIED WATERPROOFING
Waterproofing shall be a 1.5mm thick, flexible, self-adhesive sheet
membrane comprising a rubber/bitumen compound and a grey coloured,
dimensionally stable, HDPE composite solar reflective film. The membrane
shall have a typical water vapour transmission rate of 0.06 g/m2/day
(ASTM E96-92) and be tested to withstand 70m hydrostatic head at laps
(ASTM D5385-93).

C. MATERIALS PROPOSED
3.0 EXECUTION
A. The installer shall examine conditions of substrates and other conditions
under which this work is to be performed and notify the Contractor, in
writing, of circumstances detrimental to the proper completion of the work.
Do not proceed with work until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected.
PRE-APPLIED WATERPROOFING
Preprufe® 300 R is a rigid sheet and will not stretch under the weight of
concrete to conform to undulations.
When setting forms and reinforcing steel caution shall be exercised to avoid
damage to the impervious membrane. The surface of the impervious
membrane extending outside the forms shall be protected during subsequent
operations.
Penetrations - Generally, piles, pipes etc. are sealed to the with Bituthene®
Liquid Membrane. Ensure pile or pipe surfaces that will receive Bituthene®
LM are clean, dry and free of contaminates/loose material. Cut Preprufe®
R close to penetration - ensure the membrane surface is clean dry and free
of contaminants. Mix and apply Bituthene® LM in accordance with
manufacturer’s Data Sheet to form a continuous fillet and provide a water-
tight seal between membrane and penetration.
PRE-APPLIED WATERPROOFING
3.3 Expansion/Movement Joints
Ensure the underside of the waterbar is clean dry and able to bond
continuously with the Bitustik®.

1.2 Submittal
All product materials shall be submitted for approval both with literature and
samples prior to commencement of any work.
1.4 Testing
The Contractor is to test, to the satisfaction of the Engineer, all areas of
roofing and waterproofing for water penetration. These tests are to be carried
out after the membrane has been applied.
The Contractor is to allow in his tender rates for such areas to be flooded with
water, and left for a minimum of 48 hours.
On completion or roofing works the Contractor is to leave the roof in a sound
and watertight condition, to the approval of the Engineer, and in a satisfactory
stage for handing over.
1.5 Guarantee
Only an approved specialized sub-contractor having at least ten years
experience in the waterproofing works shall be allowed to carry out the
waterproofing and roofing system required for the works in accordance with
the drawings, specifications and as directed by the Engineer.
The Contractor is to provide the Employer with a Ten Years (10) Product
Guarantee Insurance cover guaranteeing the materials, workmanship,
installation and design for the complete waterproofing and roofing systems.
This insurance guarantee will have to be issued by one of the National
Insurance Companies.
3.2 Protection
The Contractor shall allow for proper protection of all finished surfaces, as per
the Engineer's directives.
