Preface
Competency base Medical Education (CBME) was introduced for MBBS course
from the batch of 2019. The main difference between this new curriculum and the
old one is the emphasis on achievement of competencies. This Curriculum is
‘outcome based’. Keeping this in mind a list of all subject-wise competencies were
made available by National Medical Commission on the website. Having ‘outcome
based “view, necessitates accurate record keeping. This logbook of surgery is one of
the instruments of such record.
The logbook has been broadly divided into sections, for each professional year.
i.e. 2nd MBBS, 3rd Year part I and 3rd Year part II. Every section has details of
competencies, skills, and Self Directed Learning.
This logbook shall be part of the formative assessment of the student .

General Instructions
1. The logbook is a record of the academic / co-curricular activities of the student, who
would be responsible for maintaining this logbook.
2. The student is responsible for getting the entries in the logbook verified by the faculties
in charge regularly.
3. Entries in the logbook will reflect the activities under taken in the department.
4. The logbook is a record of various activities by the student like:

Eligibility to appear for professional (University)
Examination
A. Attendance
Attendance requirement is 75% in theory and 80% in Practical/Clinical postings
for eligibility to appear for the University examination in that subject. In the
subjects that are taught in more than one phase – the learner must have
attendance of 75% in theory and 80% in practical in each phase of instruction in
that subject. If an examination comprise more than one subject (for e.g. General
Surgery and allied branched), the candidate must have 75% attendance in each
subject and 80% attendance in each clinical posting. Learners who do not have at
least 75% attendance in the electives will not be eligible for the Third Professional
– Part II examination. 75% attendance in Professional Development Programme
(AETCOM Module) is required for eligibility to appear for final examination in
each professional year. 75% attendance in the electives and submission of log
book maintained during elective is required for eligibility to appear in the final
MBBS examination.
B. Internal Assessment
Learner must secure at least 50% marks of the marks (Combined in theory and
practical/clinical posting: not less than 40% marks in theory practical separately)
assigned for internal assessment in a particular subject to be eligible for appearing at the
final University examination of that subject. Internal assessment marks will reflect as
separate head of passing at the Examination. Learner must have completed the
certifiable competencies or that phase of training and completed the logbook
appropriately to be eligible for appearing at the final university examination.

COMPETENCY
Competency based learning would include designing and implementing medical
education curriculum that focuses on the desired and observable ability in real life
situations. In order to effectively fulfil the roles as mention below, the Indian medical
graduate would have obtained the competencies of surgery at the time of graduation.
• Clinician who understands and provides preventive, promotive, curative,
palliative and holistic care with compassion.
• Leader and member of the health care team and system with capabilities to collect,
analyze, synthesize and communicate health date appropriately.
• Communicator with patients, families, colleagues and community.
• Lifelong learner committed to continuous improvement of skills and knowledge.
• Professional, who is committed to excellence, is ethical responsive an
accountable to patients, community and profession.
SELF DIRECTED LEARNING
Self directed learning (SDL) defined as the “Preparedness of
student to engage in learning activities defined by himself rather than
a teacher”.
The graduate Medical Education 209 document brought out by
the MCI lists – long learning as one of the roles of the Indian Medical
Graduate (IMG). One of the methods suggested achieving this is SDL.
Seven key components of SDL have been described. These include
–
• The identification of learning needs
• Formulation of learning objectives
• Utilization of appropriate learning resources
• Employing suitable learning strategies
• Commitment to learning contract
• Evaluating learning outcome
• The teacher as a facilitator.
Dedicated time for SDL is provided for each subject in the second
phase. In General Surgery & allied subject there are 20 hours for self
directed learning (SDL). Out of which 5 hours has to be certified in
Third Professional part I and remaining 15 hours has to be certified in
Third professional part II.
