How have global poverty levels changed?

– decreased poverty/ fewer people in poverty

• What are the different types of erosion? Attrition, abrasion, solution, hydraulic action

• How can flooding be prevented? – Afforestation (planting trees), not building next to the flood
plain, levee to block the flow of water

• How are different types of weather measured? – sunlight with a sun recorder, cloud coverage with
oktas, wind with a weather vane or anemometer, rain with a rain gauge, air pressure with a
barometer, humidity with a hygrometer, temperature with a thermometer

• Know the layers of ocean – sunlight, twilight, midnight, lower midnight, trenches

• What are the features of shield and composite volcanoes? Shield – broad with gentle slope like a
warriors shield, less violent eruptions, fast runny lava flow. Composite – large, layered, steep sides,
violent eruptions, slow thick lava flow

• What are the responses to volcanic eruptions? – evacuation, monitoring eruptions, rescue, provide
food, water and shelter for those affected

• What are the positives and negatives of wind energy? Positives – renewable and efficient.
Negatives- expensive, noisy, hazard for birds, some people think it is ugly

• What is the rain shadow effect? – relief rain when the air is forced up hills or mountains then cools
and rains and sinks back down the mountain dry. The rain shadow is the other side of the mountain
because it does not get rain. This is where most desserts form.

• How have animals adapted to the desert? – camels – long eye lashes, hump for storing fat, wide
feet to stand on sand.

• How do people get water in the desert? – from vegetation, oases or digging down into the ground
to reach aquifers. Some can also remove salt from seawater (desalination)

• Why is the Middle East an important region? – it is the crossroads of the world where 3 continents
meet.

• What is primary and secondary data? – Primary is data you collect yourself/ secondary is data
collected by someone else that you use

• How to complete a bar graph – X axis ACROSS the corridor and up the stairs is Y axis. Data is
recorded on the bottom and measurements/figures are up the side. Include a title and a key if
necessary.

• Why was Icknield chosen as a study site for your fieldwork? – it was close and convenient due to
time constraints
