An hour of planning can save you 10 hours of doing
STUDENT PLANNING
Setting a Goal and Objectives
Once the above questions are answered, students can come up with a goal. What do you want to
accomplish?
GOAL: We want to understand how teens manage time for important activities
Use the 5 W's and H again.
You are now defining a new situation that will achieve the goal.
Who? Tix and Mix
What? Will use questionnaire to survey neighbourhood teens
Where? at home/ across zoom
When? Sept 22-Sept 26
Why? enable Nix to create the survey Qs.
How? We will begin by penning who to contact.
Develop an ACTION PLAN Create SMART goals
Specific Goals are clear and unambiguous by answering WHAT is expected, WHY it is important, and
WHO is involved.
Measurable Can your goal be measured? Being able to measure your progress and goals will help your
team stay on track and focused. Think of answers to the questions:
•How much?
•How many?
•How will I know when it is accomplished?
Achievable Set your goals high, but attainable. As you grow and develop, your goals become more
achievable.
Relevant Make sure that your goals are relevant to what you are trying to achieve.
Ask questions like:
Does this match our efforts and needs?
Will this help us achieve our desired end result?
Timely A time-‐bound goal (deadline) establishes a sense of urgency and helps your project stay on
track and focused.
Create SMART goals Develop an ACTION PLAN
Transform Goals into an Action Plan
Now that you have created your SMART goals, it is time to create an action
plan! The purpose of an action plan is to create a connection between the
SMART goals you have created, and the steps that need to take to achieve your
SMART goals.
Creating your Action Plan can take a lot of time, however, a well-‐planned project will
save you a lot of time in unidentified obstacles, challenges, and steps that you may run
into.
In your Project team
• Take time to go over all the steps that need to be taken in order for you to achieve
your project goals.
• Think about possible challenges and obstacles that may arise – being prepared for
challenges is a great way to ensure that your plan will be a success.
Execute the project
Revise and Update
• When carrying out your project, expect to run into obstacles and setbacks.
• Make sure you revise your action plan for any new identified possible challenges along your way and
develop a tentative plan to overcome them.
• If your project does encounter setbacks, make sure to revise your initial deadlines.
• Making the deadlines realistic will help all your team members stay positive and on track!
Communicate
• Holding lots of team meetings where everyone has a chance to update and report on their tasks helps
keep and motivated to work on the project.
• Make sure during the meetings you always refer back to your action plan and your deadlines.
• Make any new obstacles or new deadlines on the project plan.
Team cohesiveness and milestones
• To keep everyone working together and motivated to finish the project, highlight and celebrate Key
Milestones.
• These are constructed points along the project timeline that the team chooses to focus on and celebrate.
• They normally highlight the accomplishment of a huge task or obstacle.
Why RUBRICS?
Rubrics let students know what is expected - By seeing how you are going to grade them, and what elements you are
going to be looking for, students can have confidence that they are completing the project properly.
Rubrics help students to be self-reflective - Even though you will end up using the rubric to assess the student, they can
use it as well for self evaluation, helping them to take more ownership of their work and look for possible improvements.
Rubrics help guide your instruction - Knowing how you will grade can help inform how you teach. A well crafted rubric will
lay out expectations for the higher-level learning you want your students to achieve, which can help remind you to mirror those
expectations through your teaching.
Rubrics provide detailed assessments - Rather than just getting a single number to summarize an entire project, students
can get more detailed feedback on each element of their work, helping them to understand where they can grow.
Rubrics provide consistency in grading - Let's face it. We are humans, and grading the 100th essay, may not be quite the
same as grading the 1st. Likewise our grading can be influenced by time of day, state of mind, and whether you are grading
before or after your team lost the big game. Having a rubric can help bring some objectivity to the assessment process,
reducing some potential bias and inconsistencies.
Rubrics can be used in any subject - Rubrics are not just for language arts teachers. Any subject area or grade level can
use rubrics. A rubric simply lets you step back and evaluate the full learning process, whatever it may be.

6. Creativity
Teach students about PLAGIARISM
The best way to prevent plagiarism is to educate students on how to
properly conduct research, cite, quote, and produce unique and
original work.
Guide your students to summarise information got from the original source.
Their summary should sound like THEM, not the source.
After writing the summary, check the original source to make sure your summary
is correct and that key terms are spelled correctly.
Finally, make sure you give credit to your source for this information.
(Show students a few different sentence stems so they have options for building
their sentence, e.g., “According to…” “In her article, _____ says…”)
A Bibliography lists ALL of the material you have consulted in
preparing your essay whether or not you have actually referred to and
cited the work. This includes the websites as well.
