1.0 Purpose :
To establish and maintain the documented Standard Operating Procedure to ensure that the testing is
carried out as per the applicable specifications / standards.
2.0 Parameter to be Tested :
The impact test Is used to determine percentage of shear fracture on the surface of broken impact
specimens, absorbed energy and lateral expansion measurement.
3.0 Responsibility and Authority :
Responsibility of complying with this Standard Opearating Procedure lies with the Technicians and Engineers.
Authority of changing this SOP rests with the Techanical Manager.
4.0 Reference Documents :
As per ASTM E 23 - 2013 or IS 1757 - 1998.
Testing Instruments :
Sr. No. Description Range Least Count
1 Charpy Impact Testing Machine 300 joules Max, 2 joules
2 Profile Projector Magnification 10X 10X
3 Vernier Caliper 150 mm Max, 0.01
4 Micrometer 25 mm Max. 0.001 mm
5.0 Test Specimen Preparation :
The samples shall be prepared as per drawings provided in ASTM E23 - 2013 / IS 1757 - 1998.
6.0 Identification of Test Specimen :
Identification marks shall be either 10-mm square ends, the side of the specimen that faces up when the
specimen is positioned in the anvils; or the side of the specimens opposite the notch.
No marking, on any side of the specimen, shall be within 15 mm of the centre line of the notch.
7.0 Preliminary Checking before testing :
Ensure that the Impact Test Machine cleaned properly.
The reference instrumenst shall have valid calibration and traceable to the National Standard.
8.0 Test Method :
8.1 All specimens shall be kept in low temperature media usually are chilled fluids (such as water, ice plus water,
dry ice plus organic solvents, or liquid nitrogen) & shall be cooled to the specified temp.
8.2 For test performed at room temperature , a temperature of 25 ± 10C is recommended.
8.3 Samples shall be kept for at least 5 min / as specified by the customer in liquid media after attaining the
required test temperature. Temperature shall be measured by calibrated thermometer. Temperature control
of the heating or cooling medium shall be within ±1°C.
8.4 The samples are then placed on the impact testing machine anvil.

8.5 The pendulum is then raised to latched position, set the energy indicator to maximum scale reading and then
rellease the pendulum.
8.6 Note the absorbed energy (in Joules) of each specimen.
8.7 If the pendulum is not released within 5 sec after removing the specimen from the conditioning medium
(chilling unit), specimen shall not be broken. The specimen shall be again returned back to the conditioning
medium for the period of at least 5 min.
8.8 At the end of test, give a free swing to the pendulum for checking it's zero value absorbed energy.
8.9 Shear Area shall be determined by any one of the following method.
8.9.1 Measure the length and width of brittle portion of fracture surface (as per ASTM E23-2007 Table A6.1 and
6.2/ASTM A370 - 2011 Table 7 & 8) and determine the percent shear area.
8.9.2 Compare the appearance of the fracture of the specimen with a fracture appearance chart Fig 14 of ASTM
A370-2011 / ASTM E23 Figure A6.1
8.10 Measure the Lateral expansion (as per ASTM E23-2012/ASTM A370 -2011) and determine the lateral
expansion.
9.0 Acceptance / Rejection crieteria :
Product / customer specification
10.0 Calibration :
Machine calibrated as per ASTM E23 & relevant ISO standard once in a year.
11.0 Record :
Results are recorded in Physical observation sheet UMS/F/13 and report as per UMS/F/03.
12.0 Accomodation and Enviromental Conditions :
The machine is kept in a region 2.3m X 3.5m wide.
For test performed at room temperature , a temperature of 25 ± 10C is recommended.
13.0 Uncertainty Components (Type B)
13.1 Uncertainty due calibration certificate (Normal Distribution)
13.2 Uncertainity due to accuracy of the instrument, +/- 1% (Rectangular Distribution)
13.3 Uncertainity due to resolution of the equipment, 2J (Rectangular Distribution)
13.4 Uncertainity due to parallax error, 1J (Rectangular Distribution)
13.5 Uncertainity due to error in measurement of cross sectional area ( Rectangular Distribution)
