L98A2 Cadet GP Rifle – Weapons Handling Test (WHT)

Basic Info:
Calibre: 5.56mm
Max Magazine Capacity: 30 rounds (Can hold 32, but no operation)
Types: Ball, Blank and Drill (Single Shot)

Test Procedure
Part 1 – Safety
Stores Conditions
Rifle with sling fitted, unloaded, safety catch at ‘F’ weapon 1. Order the Cadet or CFAV to ‘take control of the weapon’,
lying on the ground. without further direction the Cadet or CFAV is to take control
of the weapon and carry out NSPs.

2. Order the Cadet or CFAV to hand over the weapon. The


Cadet or CFAV is to point the muzzle in a safe direction and
carry out NSPs before handing over their weapon to the
instructor.

1. NSP (Normal Safety Precautions)


- Safety Catch
- Cock rifle and hold working parts to rear
- Inspect Chamber (3-point check)
- Release Working Parts
- Forward Assist the Cocking Handle
- Fire off the action
- Safety
- Close dust cover
- END

When should NSPs take place?


• When the weapon hasn’t been in your direct supervision
• At the beginning and end of every lesson, practice or range period.
• Immediately on returning from a patrol, other exercise or duty.
• Handing the weapon over to someone else

2. Handing over the weapon to someone else


• Safety Catch
• Cock rifle and hold working parts to rear
• Inspect Chamber (3-point check)
• If clear, say ‘Weapon is clear’ and wait for a response from the receiver saying,
‘Weapon is clear’ – IF WEAPON IS NOT CLEAR, SAY ‘WEAPON IS NOT CLEAR’ AND
NOTIFY A CFAV
• Release Working Parts
• Forward Assist the Cocking Handle
• Fire off the action

• Safety
• Close dust cover
• Hold and offer the weapon to the receiver and say ‘Your Weapon’, only release
the weapon and pass it on once they have said ‘My Weapon’
• END

Part 2 – Striping, Cleaning and Assembling


Stores Conditions
Rifle with sling fitted, unloaded, cleaning kit (with 1. Order the Cadet or CFAV to strip the rifle for daily
combination tool out), flannelette and oil. cleaning. Ask the following questions:

a. What size flannelette is used to clean the barrel?

b. What size flannelette is used to oil the barrel?

c. Show how you would remove fouling or debris from the


chamber.

d. Show how you would examine the barrel for cleanliness.

e. When should magazines be stripped?

2. Order the Cadet or CFAV to indicate the parts of the


combination tool that are used to clean the gas plug.

3. Order the Cadet or CFAV to ‘Assemble the rifle and carry


out the function test’. The Cadet or CFAV without further
direction is to carry out the drills ordered.

1. – Striping the rifle

- Safety Catch
- Cock rifle and hold working parts to the rear
- Inspect Chamber (3-point check)
- Release working parts
- DO NOT OPERATE TRIGGER OR CLOSE DUST COVER

- Remove Sling
- Point muzzle towards the ground and slowly take out the rear and front locking pins of
the TMH (Trigger Mechanism Housing) until it clicks (Don’t take it fully out)

- Place hand over butt of rifle and slowly detached the TMH

- Place the TMH down


- Place thumb over Recoil rod and spring, then slowly pull the TMH pin to the max (Don’t
take it out)
- The Recoil Rod will now spring out, place that down
- Remove Cocking Handle
- Remove Bolt Assemble Carrier

- Move to Gas parts


- Remove Gas piston rod

- Remove Gas Cylinder

- Remove Gas Plug (Should only be in 9 O’clock or 3 O’clock position)


WHT Handling Instructions: For MOD Use by MOD Cadet Forces Only

a. 45mm x 45mm
b. 45mm x 45mm
c. Soft Brush on the chamber removing any debris
d. Hold up the weapon towards the light about 150mm away from the head, muzzle to the eye; keep
both eyes open and follow the lands and grooves throughout their length
e. If they really need to be – GO TO A CFAV (Cadet Forces Adult Volunteer)

3. Assembly - (Reverse order of Stripping Rifle)


Function Test:
- Safety Catch
- Cock the Rifle and Forward Assist
- Try operating trigger with Safety (Should not operate)
- Switch to Fire
- Operate trigger AND HOLD, DO NOT LET GO
- Cock the rifle and Forward Assist
- Release the trigger (Should hear a clunck)
- Operate the trigger (Should fire action off)
- Set Safety Catch
- Close Dust Cover

Part 3 – Magazine Filling


Stores Conditions
Magazine with 10 loose drill rounds. 1. On the command ‘Go’ the Cadet or CFAV is to fill the
magazine with 10 drill rounds by hand.
Instructors Note: All ammunition is to be removed from the
magazine and a magazine fitted with a penny depressor is
to be used for the remaining tests.

Part 4 – Loading
Stores Conditions
Rifle with sling fitted, one magazine in pouch. 1. Order ‘With a magazine fitted with a penny depressor
load’. Pouches must be refastened.
Instructors Note: Load with a magazine fitted with a
depressor. Instructors Note: Leave the weapon loaded for test 5.

Load:
- Safety Catch
- Using Left hand, fit magazine (Firm right hand hold on pistol grip)
- Pull down on magazine to ensure it is fitted correctly

Part 5 – Ready Drill


Stores Conditions
Rifle with sling fitted, loaded (from Test No.4), 1. Order ‘Down’.
representative target.
2. Once the Cadet or CFAV has aligned onto the target
order ‘Ready’.

Instructors Note: The actions tested are those relating to the


ready drill only.

Ready:
- Safety Catch
- Cock rifle and hold working parts to rear
- Release working parts and forward assist
- Forefinger is to be clear on trigger and placed along the side of the trigger guard
(trigger discipline)

Part 6 – Making Safe


Stores Conditions
Rifle with sling fitted, loaded and Ready (from Test No.5), 1. Order ‘With a magazine fitted with a penny depressor -
representative target. make safe’.

2. The Cadet or CFAV is to unload as taught and then place


on a fresh magazine.

Load & Make Safe:


- Safety Catch
- Remove Magazine
- Cock rifle and hold working parts to the rear
- Inspect Chamber (3-point check)
- Release working parts
- Fire off action (A round may be ejected at this time)
- Safety Catch
- Close dust cover

- Load Magazine

Part 7 – Stoppages Immediate Action (IA)


Stores Conditions
Rifle with sling fitted, loaded (from Test No.6), 1. Order ‘Ready’ then ‘Fire’.

2. Order ‘Rifle firing alright - rifle stops’. Cadet or CFAV
is to carry out the IA drill, ‘Cocking Handle fully forward’.
Cadet or CFAV is to tap forward on the cocking handle
and continue firing. Order ‘Rifle fires alright, Stop’

Part 8 – IA and Loose Magazine Drill


Stores Conditions
Rifle with sling fitted, loaded and ready (from Test No.7), 1. Order ‘Fire’ and then ‘Rifle firing alright - rifle stops’.
representative target. Cadet or CFAV is to carry out the IA drill, ‘Cocking handle
fully forward’. Cadet or CFAV is to tap forward on the
cocking handle and continue firing.

2. Order ‘Rifle still fails to fire’.

3. On examination of the body and chamber order ‘Rounds


in the magazine, chamber clear’. Allow the Cadet or CFAV
to complete the drill and fire.

4. Order ‘Rifle fires alright’ ‘Stop’.

Part 9 – IA and Obstruction Drill


Stores Conditions
Rifle with sling fitted, loaded and ready (from Test No.8), 1. Order ‘Fire’ and then ‘Rifle firing alright - rifle stops’.
representative target. Cadet or CFAV is to carry out the IA drill, ‘Cocking handle
NOT fully forward’.

2. On examination of the body and chamber order


‘Obstruction’.

3. When the Cadet or CFAV has removed the magazine and


attempts to clear the obstruction order ‘Obstruction Clear’.

4. When the Cadet or CFAV has visually inspected the


chamber order ‘Chamber Clear’.

5. The Cadet or CFAV is to complete the obstruction drill.


Order ‘Rifle fires alright’, ‘Stop’.

Part 10 – IA and Empty Magazine Drill


Stores Conditions
Rifle with sling fitted, loaded (from Test No.9), 1. Instruct the Cadet or CFAV to cock the weapon and apply
representative target. the holding open catch, with the working parts held to the
rear, order ‘Test and adjust - Fire’ then ‘Rifle firing alright,
rifle stops’.

2. The Cadet or CFAV is to carry out the IA drill, order


‘Empty Magazine’. Cadet or CFAV is to carry out the drill for
an empty magazine.

3. When the Cadet or CFAV has completed the drill and


continues firing order ‘Rifle fires alright’ ‘Stop’.

Part 11 – Unloading
Stores Conditions
Rifle with sling fitted, loaded and ready. 1. Order ‘Unload’.

2. The test is not complete until the Cadet or CFAV has


recovered the ejected round, replaced it in the magazine
and fastened the pouch.

3. Order ‘Stand Up’.

Unload:
- Safety Catch
- Remove Magazine
- Cock rifle and hold working parts to the rear

- Inspect chamber (3-point check)


- Release working parts, forward assist
- Fire off action
- Safety catch
- Close Dust Cover
