INTRODUCTION

A GUI (graphical user interface) is a system of interactive visual components for

computer software. A GUI displays objects that’s convey information and represent actions
that the user can take. The objects change color, size, or visibility when the user interacts with
them.

A GUI such as Windows, macOS, Linux, Apple IOS, or Android allows the user to
interact with the system using an environment of graphical icons, menus, and windows. With
a GUI, a system is easier to use and requires less knowledge of the overhead command
structure that controls the system. For this reason, most users rely on GUI environments.

Components of GUI:

 Pointers: The pointer appears on the user’s screen as a marking symbol.

The pointer moves on to choose instructions and objects as per requirement.
 Icons: Icons allude to tiny visual representations of windows,
documents, actions and other things on the display screen to simplify. A pointer and
pointing device can be used by the user to carry out the initial tasks for the overall
processes.
 Pointing tool: At the initial stages, the pointing tool enables the user to
select and move the required pointer items on the screen, include a trackball or mouse.
It is the most beneficial tool in GUI.
 Desktop: The desktop is the screen that is contained within the icons
and user beneficial.

1 DIALOGUE BOX

A dialog box is a common type of window in the Graphical User Interface (GUI) that
displays information to the user or prompts the user for input. It provides a way for software
applications to interact with the user and the applications or software. The dialog box is used
to interact with the user by presenting information, requesting input, and confirmation the
actions. It serves as the communication tool between the user interaction and control.

Dialog boxes are appearance as differently, featuring the title bar, the area of the
content, and interaction buttons used by the users. The title bar is used to display the dialog
title it provides the context for the user. The content is used to display the messages such as
input fields or relevant to the purpose of the dialog box. Buttons are used to allow the users to
perform some actions like confirming the dialog, canceling the dialog, or dismissing the
dialog.

Purpose of Dialog Box:

 User Input;
 Selections;
 Configuration and Settings;
 Progress Indication;
 Confirmation and Decision Making;
 Alerts and Notifications.

Examples of Dialog Box:

1. Alert Dialog Box;

2. File Save or Open Dialog Box;
3. Confirmation Dialog Box.

2 WIMP

Windows, icons, menus and pointing device (WIMP) denotes a style of computer-
human interaction involving the aforementioned elements of the graphical user interface
(GUI) which is the most common interaction method being used by desktop computers today.
WIMP interaction was developed at Xerox PARC in 1973, and the term coined by Merzouga
Wilberts in 1980, with the method popularized by Apple’s Macintosh in 1984.

Windows, icons, menus and pointing device (WIMP) interaction is what the general
public is used to in computing, because it is the most common interaction used in popular
operating systems such as Windows, Apple’ OS and even in modern Linux and UNIX-like
operating systems. But in more development-oriented operating systems such as Linux and
UNIX, there is an option to forgo the pointing device altogether and perform all interaction
with the OS through the command prompt or shell, but the windows remain.

Characteristics of a WIMP system:

A window isolates programs from each other, which allows a user to switch between
running programs by giving focus to specific windows.

Icons act as shortcuts to various programs, locations and actions possible in the OS. 
A menu which can be text-based, icon-based or a combination of both can be used as a
selection system for various tasks.

A pointer represents the location of a device movement, typically a mouse used to

make selections in the GUI. Because WIMP is so common, it has been erroneously used as a
synonym for the GUI. This is false because even though all WIMP systems are a type of GUI,
not all types of GUIs are WIMP, some do not use windows to isolate applications, and mobile
operating systems like Android and iOS use icons, widgets and menus, but not windows or
pointing devices.

3 FORMS THE CURSOR TAKES ON YOUR COMPUTER

In computing, a cursor is an indicator used to show position on a monitor screen or

that responds to keystrokes on a text input device or actions on a pointing device. Generally, it
is in the form of a white arrow in a diagonal position with the tip to the left and up, although it
can take different sizes, and shapes. Each type of mouse cursor has its own function and
purpose, which changes depending on the situation.

So let’s reveal the 3 different types or forms of cursors with their names and pictures.

1. Arrow Cursor:

2. Text Pointer/I-beam

3. Hand Cursor

CONCLUSION

GUIS were designed to tackle the usability challenges of the text-based command line
interface (CLI). Earlier, with CLI, users had to work with complicated commands to operate a
computer. GUI eliminated that problem by implementing operating system (OS) that supports
clickable visual elements for easy interaction. Modern GUIS also feature touchscreens and
voice recognition capabilities.

Nowadays most users of operating systems use graphical user interfaces, because a
GUI uses graphics, images, icons or elements linked to reality to connect to the actions or
functionalities that the systems offer to the user, which as already mentioned, without a GUI it
is very difficult to manipulate these systems without a deep knowledge of the CLI commands.
That's why GUI is very important for software developers and especially for users of those
same software for research, work, and entertainment.

As technology is one of the most evolving aspects in the world, GUIs are not left out
in this process and have continued to evolve with the beginning of the 21st century, bringing
concepts such as 3D graphics, touch-based interfaces and mobile operating systems such as
IOS and android.
