PREFACE

This standard was prepared by the Association’s Committee on Threaded Fasteners,

in order to provide manufacturing and purchasing information on a metric series of flat
metal washers.

Based on a preliminary draft submitted by the Fasteners Institute of Australia, this

standard, along with other drafts and published standards, is one of a series intended
to provide a rational range of standards for metric fasteners and accessories.

In the preparation of this standard consideration was given to the following ISO
Recommendations and Draft Proposal:

ISO/R887—Washers for hexagon bolts and nuts—metric series

ISO 273 —Clearance holes for metric bolts

Requirements in the following Australian Standards were also taken into account:

AS 1110—ISO Metric hexagon precision bolts and screws

AS 1111—ISO Metric hexagon commercial bolts and screws

AS 1112—ISO Metric hexagon nuts, including thin nuts, castle nuts and slotted nuts.

AS 1123—Metric sizes of wrought ferrous and non-ferrous strip.

To meet the needs of Australian industry, this standard provides for types (varieties)
of washers for use with externally threaded metric fasteners. The types of washers
specified and their compatability with ISO metric washers are listed below:

Table 2.1—Bright Metal Washers—Small Series: based on ISO product grade ‘A’
series 1

Table 3.1—Bright Metal Washers—Normal Series: based on ISO product grade ‘A’
series 2

Table 4.1—Black Steel Washers—Normal Series: based on ISO product grade ‘B’
series 2

Table 4.2—Black Steel Washers—Large Series: based on ISO product grade ‘B’,
series 3.

The bright metal washers have been specified in two series according to intended end
usage. The small series given in Table 2.1 is mainly intended for use with metric
machine screws and metric socket-head cap screws whilst the normal series in
Table 3.1 is mainly intended for use with metric hexagon precision grade bolts and
screws.
3 AS 1237—1973

Similarly, black steel washers in both the normal and large series are mainly intended
for use with metric hexagon commercial grade bolts and screws.

The washer thicknesses have been largely rationalized to suit Australian practice; these
values in the larger range of sizes represent a reduction in the thicknesses in ISO Draft
Proposal 501. The committee felt that no great importance has been attached to washer
thicknesses in the past and thicknesses different from those currently manufactured
have not been requested. Similarly non-ferrous washers are specified in lighter gauges
because these products are not normally used under stressed situations.

With the aim of rationalization, and to encourage industry to select from preferred
metric fasteners and accessories series, washers suitable for use with non-preferred
metric fasteners are given in Appendix C for information only.

Other appendices contain supplementary information on an extra-large series of black

steel washers, a thicker series of bright metal washers, and the basic dimensions of
washers in the size range 72 mm to 150 mm inclusive.

Australian Standard Specification

for
FLAT METAL WASHERS FOR GENERAL
ENGINEERING PURPOSES
(METRIC SERIES)

SECTION 1. SCOPE AND GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE. This specification sets out requirements for flat metal washers for
general engineering purposes, intended for use with ISO metric bolts, screws and nuts.
1.2 APPLICATION. Section 2 relates to a small series of bright metal washers for
screws from M1 to M10 inclusive, manufactured from ferrous or non-ferrous materials.
These washers are intended mainly for use with ISO metric machine screws and
ISO metric socket head cap screws, as specified in AS 1427 and AS 1420 respectively.

Section 3 relates to a normal series of bright metal washers for bolts and screws from
M1.6 to M26 inclusive, manufactured from ferrous or non-ferrous materials. These
washers are intended mainly for use with ISO metric hexagon precision bolts and
screws, as specified in AS 1110.

Section 4 relates to a normal and a large series of black steel washers for bolts from
M5 to M64 inclusive, intended mainly for use with ISO metric hexagon commercial
bolts and screws, as specified in AS 1111.

Section 5 relates to designation, packaging and identification.

NOTES:

1. The washers specifi ed are not suit able for use with the fasteners covered by AS 1252 relating to ‘high
strength steel bolt s for str uctural engineeri ng — ISO metri c series’ which include their own provision
for washers.
2. It is considered that the range of nominal sizes given is adequate for most of the appli cati ons for which
this seri es is likely to be employed, but for the convenience of users requiri ng other types or sizes,
information is provided in Appendices A to D inclusive.

1.3 NOMINAL SIZE. For the purposes of this specification, the designated nominal
size of a washer is the nominal hole size in millimetres.

1.4 FINISH. Washers shall be reasonably flat, smooth and free from burrs
detrimental to their end use.

1.5 COATING. If washers are required to have a protective or decorative coating,

the type of coating shall be specified by the purchaser in the enquiry or order and
reference made to the appropriate Australian Standard.

APPENDIX B
SIZES GREATER THAN 64 mm DIAMETER

Although it is considered that the range of nominal sizes included in Table 4.1 is
adequate for most of the applications for which standard metric washers are required,
this Appendix provides information for the convenience of users requiring larger sizes.

APPENDIX C
NON-PREFERRED SIZES

This Appendix contains information regarding metal washers suitable for use with the
second choice series of ISO metric bolts and screws diameter-pitch combinations.

It should be noted that the use of components which require metal washers in this
series is discouraged and every endeavour should be made to select a size from the
standard range.

APPENDIX D
THICK BRIGHT STEEL WASHERS

This Appendix provides information on a thicker type of bright steel washer than those
given in the standard, suitable for use in railway or other heavy engineering
applications.

The outside diameters and hole dimensions are the same as the normal series given in
Table 3.1 but the thicknesses have been increased to provide an improved stress
distribution.
