Annual Diary Writing Contest
Theme:
Doing what I love
Marco (18) writes about his great love for creating things in his winning work. Read
his entry.
Dear Diary
What a day!
5 I came across a video about 3D printing from a non-profit tech group called Limbitless Solutions. The
group makes robotic arms for children in need. The video showed one of their arms–it was just like the
arm of the comic book superhero Iron Man! Then the video showed the real hero–Albert Manero. He
made the arm using 3D printing. It cost far less than using other methods. Manero is my new hero. I
want to follow his example by making things that change people's lives.
10 I ordered my own basic 3D printer a month ago, spending all my savings on it. Just after I saw Manero’s
video, my printer arrived! I tried putting it together, but I broke a plastic part. After six long hours, I
finally stuck the machine back together with tape. The first thing I printed was a replacement for the
broken bit–LOL! Not a bad start!
My new dream feels closer than ever.

Text 2
Dear Dr Advice
I love video games and I develop my own games. It’s my favourite hobby. My parents were very
encouraging at first. When I started secondary school, they changed their mind. They now want me to quit
video games and focus on my studies. On top of this, they tease me and say, ‘Out on a date?’ whenever I
5 go out with my friends. When they do it, I act like I don’t care. It actually hurts my feeling. They just
don’t respect me. What can I do?
Very Upset
Text 3
Dear Very Upset
You must be very stressed these days. I’m happy you wrote to me for help. However, you should keep
calm. Sit down and talk to your parents about the advantages of your hobby. I understand why your
parents do not support video-gaming–it was seen as useless when your parents were young. You can tell
5 them that it is good training for new tech jobs like video game developer or drone photographer, or for
jobs like surgeon, engineer or architect. It is also a good way to relax after a long school day. Try using
real-life examples to support your words. Meanwhile, you should also make sure your hobby doesn’t
affect your schoolwork.
As for your parents’ teasing, they may be trying to get involved in your life. Dating is often a sensitive
10 subject for parents, and they may say awkward or hurtful things as they try to talk to you about it. It may
be a good idea to open up to them about your private life. For example, tell them about your friends and
the things you do together. This may stop them from worrying about you. At the same time, show them
you are a mature and responsible person who understands their worries, and will not let them down. If you
can do this, I believe they won’t be so hard on you. Remember, you mustn’t grow angry, as that would be
15 immature.
Cheers
