Julia Wawrowska - Violist
Biography
At the age of 5, Julia Wawrowska began her musical journey with violin lessons during masterclasses in Łańcut, Poland,
under the guidance of Valentina Jakubowska, a professor at the Rimsky-Korsakov Music Conservatory in St. Petersburg.
In 2008, she started her formal music education at the Emil Młynarski Music School in Warsaw, studying under Prof.
Alicja Wojakowska. After ten years, she transitioned to the viola, captivated by its rich timbre. From a young age, Julia
frequently performed with her musical family, including her father, a violinist, her mother, a pianist and opera singer,
and her younger brother, a cellist.
In 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia graduated from the Zenon Brzewski Secondary Music School for young
talents. She then commenced her bachelor's degree at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin with Prof. Walter
Küssner, and at the Fryderyk Chopin Music University in Warsaw under Katarzyna Budnik. She graduated from the Polish
university with the highest grade, A+25, in 2023, while continuing her studies in Berlin.
In September 2023, Julia began the Master Specialized Performance Soloist program at Zurich University of the Arts,
studying under Lawrence Power and Sergey Malov.
Throughout her musical journey, Julia has attended numerous masterclasses and performed for esteemed musicians,
including Tabea Zimmermann, Antoine Tamestit, Nobuko Imai, Ettore Causa, Amihai Grosz, Maxim Rysanov, Garth Knox,
Tatiana Masurenko, Daniel Raiskin, Yuri Zhislin, Gareth Lubbe, Gary Hoffman, Irvine Arditti, Reiner Schmidt, and Patricia
Kopatchinskaja.
Julia made her solo debut in October 2022 at the Zielona Góra Philharmonic Concert Hall. As a chamber musician, she
collaborates with leading performers of her generation and renowned artists such as Lisa Batiashvili, Sergey Malov,
Andreas Janke, Thomas Grossenbacher, and Orfeo Mandozzi. She has also performed as a guest artist with the Karajan
Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and has appeared at international music festivals, including the Schleswig
Holstein Festival, Davos Festival, La Folle Journée, and Verao Classico Festival.
Julia's musicality and expressiveness have been recognized in numerous solo and chamber music competitions. Notable
accolades include 1st Prize in the solo category at the Contemporary Music Interpretation Competition ZHdK (March
2024), 2nd Prize and Special Prize for the best interpretation of the obligatory piece at the XI Jan Rakowski National
Viola Competition in Poznań (November 2023), 1st Prize at the Inter-University Viola Competition in Poland (2022),
Grand Prix at the Stefan Kamasa Competition for Polish Viola Music Interpretation (2022), 2nd Prize at the Stefan
Kamasa Competition for Viola Solo (2020), Award for the Musical Personality of the Piła Festival and Academy (2020),
1st Prize at the National Miniature Competition in Zielona Góra (2019), 2nd Prize at the International String Instruments
Competition in Elbląg (2019), 3rd Prize at the International Bohdan Warchał String Instruments Competition in Dolny
Kubin, Slovakia (2018), 3rd Prize at the Dominik Rutkowski Viola Competition (2018).
As a member of the Euphorie Quartet, Julia has won prizes in chamber music competitions, including the Fanny
Mendelssohn International Competition in the Chamber Music Category and the France Music Competition. The
quartet's members include German-Hungarian pianist Daniel Streicher, Japanese violinist Coco Tomita, and German
cellist Clara Eglhuber.
Since November 2021, Julia has been supported by Pirastro Official as an Echo Arts Pirastro Young Artist. She is a
scholarship recipient of the Deutschlandstipendium, Lyra Foundation, Marian & Zofia Kirsch Foundation, Bruno Schuler
Stiftung, Patenschafts Stipendium, the Scholarship for Outstanding Achievement from the Prime Minister of the Ministry
of Culture and National Heritage of Poland, and a member of the Polish Children's Fund, which supports artistically
talented Polish youth.
A significant part of Julia's musical identity is dedicated to contemporary music, and she has premiered works by living
Polish composers for solo viola.
