Synthesis/Reflection Paper based on PPST (Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers)
To guarantee that teachers are appropriately qualified to implement the K to 12 Program, the
Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) will be used as the foundation for all
learning and development activities for teachers. It can also be utilized for teacher recruitment
and advancement. This set of standards must be used to evaluate teachers' performance. In this
formal document containing goals and activities meant to improve instruction, I will be stating
my professional growth and reflection as a Practice Teacher in Bukidnon State University-
Secondary School Laboratory based on the said PPST.
Domain 1. Content Knowledge and Pedagogy
To keep the lesson interesting for the students and provide a variety of entry points to the
material, I planned the lessons using my knowledge of available resources (Domain 1). I was
aware that the new normal may bring a massive impact to the way of educational instruction,
which was evident during my internship to students from the conventional green boards in a
classroom to digitize medium of instruction utilizing laptops and gadgets. With that in mind, I
was able to craft and incorporate a variety of ways into various parts of the lesson and give
opportunities to provide well-managed online learning and sensory experiences related to the
lesson or to the topic. Each day's session builds on the previous day's, and all lessons are
scaffolded and customized to support or challenge students as needed. Each session includes
group work, with instructional groups that are purposefully arranged (breakout rooms) to
maximize student learning support. Students were able to understand each concept carefully and
systematically, ensuring their success in obtaining the learning outcomes and mastering the topic.
Those things were done by; 1) incorporating some e-learning tools and digitizing e-games to the
lessons which are generously available on the internet wherein it helps and enhances their
motivation to learn, 2) focusing attention of each learners by timely calling them during
discussion, 3) effectively communicating in imparting knowledge with of course mastery in the
content being teach as well as the medium of instruction use (Filipino Language), 4) helping
students to organize their knowledge, 5) provide timely feedback, 6) balance high expectations
with student support, 7) communicate my message in a variety of ways, and 8) assist students in
time management by setting class work deadlines. So, as I write and give more lessons. I'm
honing my preparation and planning skills as well. Moreover, I have learned to demonstrate a
thorough understanding of the discipline's key principles, identify and relate them to one another.
Also, I became aware of the links between prerequisite subjects in every lesson I had delivered
by carefully connecting the learning outcomes to standards, offering a systematic and logical
structure of instruction and was able to adapt and recognize students' learning styles, knowledge
and skills, and specific needs.
Domain 2. Learning Environment
When thinking about the structure of classes, as teachers we must consider not just the
discussion-based approach but also the actual size and organization of the classes when planning
the structure of the students' lessons. To point out, the learning environment of our learners must
be conducive to learning. However, due to the rise of pandemic physical classroom environment
was temporarily restricted. Thus, distance learning/online learning paved the way for the
education to continue. New learning environments were used with the support of technology-
equipped platforms such as google meets, zoom, google classrooms, etc. By which students and
teachers work both individually and in collaboration. During my time as a practice teacher, my
daily challenge is to extend active participation or indulgence of students in discussions and
assignments, and to create an environment that disarms rather than amplifies their skepticism and
resistance. With that, here are some of the things I have learn and been doing on my class hours
to bring out the best in my students, as well as to diffuse the worst case scenario: 1) At the start
of each class session, I always set the mood by connecting to my students about their recent
happenings in their lives and remind them to take a posture of humility and thankfulness. This
stance makes us all teachable and an effective remedy to temporarily ease their struggles in
doing school work. 2) Having a “word of the day” exercise, this activity requires students to
choose a word that is relevant to them at the time, and then they will give reflecting sentences
about it. This practice, I believe, will assist students in connecting their mind and life with the
world they live in every day. 3) Acknowledge rights and mistakes in teaching, I realized
something crucial: This idea applies to my relationship with my students. On the day I
introduced myself to them I genuinely said that, "I am a fantastic teacher, however, I am not yet
a total expert so I will still make mistakes," I've learnt to tell this to my students during our first
week. “So if you notice one, please tell me so that I can correct my faults in the same way that I
urge you also to correct your errors.” As a result, I was able to build a good rapport with the
students, know them better, and get an active response from them.
Domain 3. Diversity of Learners
Effective learning occurs in classrooms when teachers create settings that students can
relate to. The problem is that these circumstances will differ for each student. "How do I satisfy
the needs of my students when each has a different learning style and degree of understanding?"
is a typical question. Fortunately, I learned to find the answer to this with my time as a practice
teacher. As educators we should begin by reflecting on ourselves in order to establish a learning
environment that authentically embraces diversity. Understanding oneself will show educators'
attitudes, sentiments, and views regarding any differences, as well as how they influence
students. Many of the academic issues made by these differences are likely a consequence of
misunderstandings. So to maintain a peaceful classroom where everyone feels comfortable and
not left behind, I carefully-construct my lesson plans and set to it that the content and the
delivery of the lesson will not harm or create disparity to the learners in the class. I have learned
to affirm the individual response of my students in a positive manner during our class hours, and
was able to give attention every time they gave or raise concerns, fairly and respectfully. That the
learners’ gender, needs, strengths, interests, experiences, linguistic, cultural, socio-economic and
religious backgrounds will not be put into vain. Whenever my students are having difficulties,
such as expounding a concept or speaking using our medium of instruction (Filipino), sometimes
I allow them to speak in the language they feel is convenient, but at the same time encourage
them to use Filipino since it is our subject matter. Aside from these, I am also doing self-
reflection after teaching so that all the areas that I need to improve will gradually change into the
positive side.
Domain 4. Curriculum and Planning
As a teacher, you should have an organized plan. The lesson plan will keep you on track
and within the boundaries. My view has always been that teachers were knowledgeable about the
subjects they taught and that this knowledge was passed on to the students. I hadn't given any
thought to the many other responsibilities that a teacher has. I now realize that there are
numerous factors to consider when developing and implementing a curriculum for each class
presented. I'm always shocked at how much information needs to be considered, such as
information configurations, scheduled activities, time considerations, classroom management,
rules, procedures, record keeping, available resources, and technology, and many more. Any
teaching session needs to be carefully designed so that learners can achieve the learning
outcomes for the session. Aside from that, teachers must ensure that the teaching method and
lesson materials are taken into account so that the knowledge and skill levels across different
learners will be attained. All in all, with the time I spent as a practice teacher, I was able to
experience crafting and modifying lesson plans to suit my students' learning styles and interests,
which has always been a challenge for me.
Domain 5. Assessment and Reporting
Assessment and reporting are important aspects of the teaching and learning process
because they help students meet high standards and create the foundation for future learning
while also notifying parents about their child's progress. During my internship, I have a range of
assessment procedures that must be applied to determined students' knowledge. Assessments in
the classroom might be diagnostic, formative, or summative. I’ve learned that it might be
beneficial to give students a quiz at the start of class to determine their preferred learning
method. This is where diagnostic evaluation comes in. To measure development, it is critical to
test them frequently and using a range of ways. During my class discussions, formative
assessments provide me with proof of students comprehension and summative assessments are
given at the end of a topic to determine whether or not the students have grasped the material.
Moreover, I have picked up that there are several things I can undertake to see if my students
have grasped the material. During the lecture, I will ask if there are any questions or if there is
anything that students would need to clarify. Students in class who are aware, paying attention,
taking notes, asking questions, and listening and reacting (laughing, pointing) to my response
suggest that they are learning. At the conclusion of my lecture, I will ask my students to take a
piece of paper and write down what they believe to be the most important point of the class and
the most pressing question they still have. Then I'll go over those notes again in class and go over
the parts that were unclear. I also did Pre- and post-tests to my students. Before delivering the
actual test, I utilize a pre-test to ensure that students understand the format and strategies for
answering the questions. Before students take the real test, I will share and review the scoring
rules with them to ensure that they understand the type of work that is required. Afterwards, I
address errors and explore assessment-related difficulties to help students obtain a better
understanding of the subject.
Domain 6. Community Linkages and Professional Engagement
The school-community partnership is a mutual understanding in which the school and the
community work together to achieve the community's and school's goals. The optimal
functioning of a school as a social institution is dependent on effective interrelationships within it
and with its associated communities. Although it is an integral part for the professional
development of each teacher, unfortunately it was not given enough time and focus during my
internship due to the fact of having limited face-face contact because of the rising cases of
Covid19 virus in some places. The emergence of pandemic during my time of practice teaching
massively created burdens to Community Linkages and Professional Engagement. Nevertheless,
as a practice teacher, I was still able to display good professional ethics during my classes.
Showing my students that I am professionally competent and ethically conscious such as having
dignity, truthfulness and fairness to them.
Domain 7. Personal Growth and Professional Development
I have come to realize that being a teacher was really not as simple as many people
believe. As a teacher, he/she entails not only knowing the subject being taught, but also being
willing to continually improve oneself holistically, as well as updating the resources and
materials one utilizes in the classroom. Reflecting and assessing the ideal technique to educate
kids to learn and how to get them to expand what they've learnt over and over. The many hours
spent in the classroom will never be enough to organize lessons, prepare materials, examine
students' assignments and tests, as well as all of the administrative duties for whichever
institution the teacher works in. Fortunately, I have co-practice teachers, institution authorities,
or supervising instructors in my internship, who greatly support me along the way, give feedback
and constructive criticisms. As a result, I felt relaxed and passionate in reviewing what I'm doing
in the class and consider those comments and suggestions from them as a driving force to
improve my teaching. All I can say is that, “It has not been easy but challenging and interesting.”
