Chapter 1

Assignment 3

1. A circular plane sheet of radius 10cm is placed in a uniform electric field of 5×10 5 N/C,
making an angle of 60˚ with the field. Calculate electric flux through the sheet.
( 1.36×104 Nm2/ C)

2. A positive charge of 17.7μC is placed at the centre of a hollow sphere of radius 0.5 m.
Calculate the flux density through the surface of the sphere. (6.4× 105 N/C)

3. The electric field components in Figure are Ex = αx 1/2, Ey=Ez = 0, in which α = 800 N/Cm2.
Calculate (i) the flux through the cube and (ii) the charge within the cube. Assume that
a=0.1m.[ (i) Flux = 1.05 Nm2/ C (ii) 9.27 × 10-12 C]

4. S1 and S2 are two hollow concentric spheres enclosing charges Q and 2Q respectively as show in
figure. (i) What is the ratio of the electric flux through S1 and S2? (ii) How will the electric flux
through the sphere S1 change, if a medium of dielectric constant 5 is introduced in the space inside
S1 in place of air? [(i) 1:3 (ii) flux reduces to 1/5]

5. A point charge of 17.7 μC is located at the centre of a cube of side 0.03 m. Find the electric flux
through each face of the cube. (3.3×105 Nm2/C)

6. A spherical Gaussian surface encloses a charge of 8.85× 10-8 C. (i) Calculate the electric flux passing
through the surface. (ii) If the radius of the Gaussian surface is doubled, how would the flux change?
[(i) 104 Nm2/C (ii) No change ]
7. Careful measurement of electric field at the surface of a black box indicates that the net outward
flux through the surface of the box is 8 × 103 Nm2/C. (i) What is the net charge inside the box? (ii) If
the net outward flux through the surface of the box were zero, could you conclude that there were
no charges inside the box? Why or why not? [(i) 0.07μC (ii) No, net charge is zero]

8. A charge of 17.7 × 10-4 C is distributed uniformly over a large sheet of area 200 m2. Calculate the
electric field intensity at a distance of 20 cm from it in air. (E = 106 N/C)

9. A charged particle having a charge of -2 × 10-6 C is placed close to a non conducting plate having a
surface charge density of 4× 10-6 C/m2. Find the force of attraction between the particle and the
plate. (F= 0.45 N)

10. A spherical conductor of radius 12cm has a charge of 1.6 × 10-7 C distributed uniformly over its
surface. What is the electric field (i) inside the sphere, (ii) just outside the sphere, (iii) at a point
18cm from the centre of the sphere? [(i) zero (ii) 10 5 N/C (iii) 4.44× 104 N/C]

11. An infinite line charge produces a field of 9 × 10 4 N/C at a distance of 2 cm. Calculate the linear
charge density. ( 0.1 μC/m)

12. A conducting sphere of radius 10 cm has an unknown charge. If the electric field 20 cm from the
centre of the sphere is 1.5 × 103 N/C and points radially inward, what is the net charge on the
sphere? ( q = -6.67 nC)

13. A uniformly charged conducting sphere of 2.4 m diameter has a surface charge density of
80 μC/m2. (i) Find the charge on the sphere. (ii) What is the total electric flux leaving the surface of
the sphere? [(i) q = 1. 45 ×10-3 C (ii) flux = 1.6 × 108 Nm2/C ]

14. Two large thin metal plates are parallel and close to each other. On their inner faces, the plates
have charge densities of opposite signs and of magnitude 17 × 10-22 C/m2 . What is E (a) to the left of
the plates (b) to the right of the plates and (c) between the plates?
[(a) zero (b) zero (c) 19.2 × 10-10 N/C]

15. Two point charges +3μC and -3μC are located 20 cm apart in vacuum. (i) Find the electric field at
the midpoint of the line joining the two charges. (ii) If a negative test charge of magnitude
