Undergraduate (BMus)
Age: The minimum age for study is 18 by 31 December in the year of joining the Academy.
For all applications, we require evidence of professional performing potential in your principal study,
sound general musicianship and a good aural response. You do not need to have taken any formal
practical music examinations. But, as a guide, we expect students to meet the level of at least either:
– Grade 8 or DipABRSM in Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) examinations
or
– Grade 8 or Associate Diploma (ATCL) in Trinity/Guildhall examinations
If your principal study is not a keyboard instrument, there is no formal minimum entry standard in
keyboard skills. However, ABRSM Grade 5 minimum (or equivalent) in piano is desirable, to enable you
to improve your general musicianship
English language requirements
If English is not your first language, you must demonstrate that you have sufficient language proficiency
before your study programme begins.
We need to receive your test result by 1 May before enrolment. Please send all your test results to the
Academy's Admissions Team [admissions@[Link]] to help us track your progress.
The Academy will accept either of these tests:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic test, not General Training)
PTE Academic Test
You should take the examination for either IELTS or PTE Academic soon after accepting a place at the
Academy, so we receive your result by 1 May.
The IELTS and PTE Academic websites have information about where and when you can take their tests.
The British Council has information about English language courses, and you can try out the IELTS test
on [Link]. If you take the IELTS test, please tell the test centre to send your result
electronically to the Academy, that is a free service and will avoid delays.
We will accept TOEFL results if the IELTS and PTE Academic tests are unavailable in your country. TOEFL
equivalent scores are listed below.
If you are not an EU or EEA citizen and will need a student visa, please see the additional requirements
detailed in the Language test requirements for UK Tier 4 visa applications section below.
