Readability index and its application in website review for Patient Education
Simply put, a readability index is a form of estimating the difficulty to comprehend the content
of a text. Ordinarily, this is done by measuring the complexity of the text by considering
measurable attributes that include word length, sentence length, the syllable count etc. In fact,
complexity is often compared to the content accuracy and the generated formula which indicates
the score is what defines the difficulty (or ease). More precisely, for webpages, readability index
focuses on the key components of the page which comprises of words, images, links among
others. In fact, Ionos (2022) narrates that a webpage’s readability index score is vital when
disseminating critical information for instance needful patient information and directives. This is
because, through the index, the websites are given a range of scores that indicate if they are
giving an honest opinion and discerning them viably and reliably. A report by Northern
Michigan University (2022) insists that indexing should always be applied when reviewing
websites to ensure that the websites offers a balanced information, that is not only easy to
understand but also does not insult patient intelligence and disease through its use of the
contextual texts or graphics.
Validity and Reliability of websites
Healthcare providers have a mandate to ensure the validity and reliability of websites when
applied as a resource during practice. In this bid, the providers ought to be cautious and very
vigilant to ascertain the accuracy of the information. One such mechanism is by using webpages
from research institutes and established educational centers which have proven track record of
expertise in the information of interest. This will clear out sites that are commercial in nature
which may be providing information that favors their products without mention adverse or side
effects. Secondly, websites should be from organization or individuals of authority as they offer
objective information (limited subjective). In addition, the content should be up-to-date (using
current patterns and recent peer reviewed articles). Lastly, the general look and feel of the
website should be organized with the subject addressed and covered sufficiently and all links

Example website used in practice
In practice, the author has often utilized NAMI (National Alliance of Mental Illness) website to
educate both staff and patients. This website is a one-stop shop for mental health and provides
additional information to caregivers, patients and support groups. Of interest is because the
content on the site is easily comprehensible and broken down to the major components of mental
health. The site as well applies appropriate videos, graphics and text that patient and caregivers
can understand (Nami.org, 2023).
