PLAN OF INVESTIGATION
2|Page
The topic of crime and violence are of interest to me and my group because violence creates
tension and suspense. Which maybe what people find appealing. Another possibility is that it is
action. We as young adults like to watch a lot of action movies hence one of the reasons this
topic was chosen. Watching violence also offers a great chance for making meaning and finding
meaning in life. Finally, my subtopic is the types of crime and violence.
The English language skills I plan to develop while doing this portfolio are as follows. I would
like or I should say I will advance my searching skills by going through a lot of info sources to
get the right materials. I will also improve my collaboration skills by sharing new ideas with my
group members. Finally, I will learn how to organize my ideas properly.
As a part of this investigation, I will need to collect 3 artifacts that will speak directly about my
research topic. My artifacts will include: a song, an article, and a poem. To identify these
artifacts, I will go to several online sources, papers, and books. I will look at the pieces collected
to look at how they have shaped my thinking. I will then correspond with my group members to
get a report of the project process. In conclusion I will then respond personally in the form of an
Oral presentation.
Reflection One

My first artifact is a poem titled “Crime and Violence” by Sheniegibson. The poem “Crime and
Violence” passionately conveys the devastating impact of criminal violence and criminality. It
paints A bleak picture of a once peaceful island no transform into a war zone. The author
implores for action, emphasizing the silence is no longer an option. The final plea is “We must
stop all this madness with actions!”, captures the essence of their plea for change and resolution.
My second artifact is a song entitled “Crime and Violence” by queen Kamala. It features an artist
singing about how they are tired of crime and violence. The song has given me an insight into
how people feel when they witness criminal violence. While listening to the song I could feel the
hatred and the pain that people are feeling about how it causes a lot of bloodshed. I can just
imagine what all the other people feel.
My 3rd and final artifact are indeed an article entitled “Concerns raised about children involved
in criminal activities”. It was published on Tuesday March 14th, 2023, for start while reading this
article, I realized that it was mainly highlighting the concerning trend of children getting
involved in criminal activities one of the main ideas I have learned was that no matter how old
they are they cannot this sea is from doing criminal activities. I almost feel sorry for the boy
because he was punished for raping the girl, but he got what he deserved in the article the
Superintendent Sharon be put to know their children's friends and to seek support from the police
when needed. She also urged peers to pay attention to their children's behaviors and to
collaborate with law enforcement to steer them away from criminal activities.
Reflection Two

As I reflected on the three artifacts that were collected one important observation is that for all
three pieces come on the writers utilize several organizational features and language techniques
to help upgrade their messages or I should say enhance. In the song Crime and Violence by
Queen Kamarla, there were a few techniques that were used. The one that stands out the most in
this piece is a metaphor. The are just comparing, while telling the children at the same time to
listen to their parents. Also, that they are tired of di crime and di violence.
Secondly is the poem. The poem “Violence and Crime” by Oliva Hankins uses language
techniques like rhyme, repetition, imagery, alliteration, and direct address to emphasize the
theme of violence and its effects. The poem’s rhythm and use of vivid descriptions create a sense
of urgency and involve the reader in the issue. It contrasts past peace with current violence,
urging action to address the problem. These techniques make the poem’s call for change both
emotionally and intellectually compelling.
Finally, my article. The article uses various language techniques to effectively communicate the
gravity of youth crime. Superintendent Sharon Beeput directly appeals to parents, using
anecdotes, statistics, and her authority to emphasize the need for parental involvement. The
report’s urgent tone and repeated calls to action encourage community cooperation to prevent
further crimes. These methods aim to inform, persuade, and engage the community in proactive
measures.

The completion of the SBA has been instrumental in enhancing various personal
skills. Communication has been a key area of improvement, fostering better cooperation within a
group setting and promoting a quicker workflow. The experience has also refined writing and
vocabulary abilities, alongside fostering a more analytical mindset. Recognizing the importance
of teamwork, the ability to embrace diverse viewpoints has been developed, which is anticipated
to be beneficial in future collaborative endeavors.
The SBA has significantly improved my writing and vocabulary. Initially, the extensive writing
required was daunting, but through continuous practice and editing, you met the necessary
standards. To craft reflections independently, I expanded my vocabulary by engaging with a
variety of reading materials and new content.
The SBA has honed my research and analytical skills. It required me to seek out dependable
sources and delve into them to extract pertinent data, enhancing your ability to discern the most
relevant information. Moreover, it demanded critical reflection on language techniques and
necessitated critical thinking, a skill that promises to be advantageous in your academic pursuits.
Completing the SBA has been a valuable process for you, leading to the enhancement of key
transferable skills such as communication, vocabulary, writing, and critical thinking, all of which
you recognize will be beneficial for your future endeavors.
Group Written Report

For us to complete this investigation we were placed in groups of five. In our groups we explored
several social issues that impact us, and we agreed to work on the theme crime and violence.
According to Cornell law school 2024 define schemas in the behavior, either by acts or omission,
and our common law as deserving of punishment or penalty. This broad topic has captured the
interests of all group members as a result, we chose different subtopics relating to this theme
over subtopics are effects of crime and violence, how to solve crime and violence, types of crime
and violence and effects of crime and violence. Each group member was assigned the task of
selecting three artifacts relating to the selected subtopic the artifacts were analyzed to determine
how they shaped overthinking as well as the writers use of language following their support, we
will do an oral presentation on our personal response to our individual topic then we will reflect
on the entire SBA.
In the process of preparing this research the artifacts that were explored presented a deeper
understanding of the theme crime and violence. The literature that we engage with confirms the
destructive effects of crime and violence in our society. Albert Ferguson explored that the effect
of crime is a threat to the growth and the prosperity of the Jamaican economy. Not only are
people emotionally affected, the financial system which impacts our incomes is also suffering
from a lack of educational and opportunities. According to Hubert Gayle some causes of crime
and violence are madness, revenge, sexual abuse, and even human trafficking. Despite how
negative this issue is, there are practical ways to solve crime. John K. Romans in his article
informed us that a good way to solve crime is to increase productivity and provide support to
prisoners to prevent them from returning to this path.
This research is deemed credible because we were careful to select artifacts that provide specific
and detailed information on our individual topics as well as our group theme. While doing this,
we ensure that the information is current. For example, all sources are published in the years
2023, 2020 and 2016 first up these were all published in the last decade, so the information is
relevant to the present. Additionally, our group selected artifacts with simple and clear language.
We also ensured that the document’s length is not too extensive. This way, we were able to
engage with the materials and make accurate interpretations. Finally, we ensure that our artifacts
included several organizational and language techniques that validate the writer's topics. For
example, our artifacts included the use of rhymes, illustration, and comparison. All these

techniques clarify and support our subtopics. Overall, our group's research provides a
comprehensive overview of the topic “Crime and Violence”.
